Looking for Parrino-Cali Families

Post by CTyler »

Hi, I am hoping someone can help me out. I would like to know more about my Grandma's family from Italy, but she really has no more information than the following:

Father's Info:
His name was Giovanni Parrino. He had a farm in Palermo, Italy, supposedly on or near Parrino Way (which I couldn't find). He came over to America when he was 19, and lived in Pennsylvania. He had one or a few sisters which Grandma thinks stayed and took over the farm. She doesn't think he had brothers but isn't sure.

Mother's Info:
Her name was Concetta Cali. She is from San Cataldo, which Grandma says was right outside of Sicily. But when I look it up on Mapquest there are 10 different San Cataldos! Concetta Cali had 3 sisters, Stella, Mary and Madeline? Not sure of those spellings. Stella got married to Tom Scott, and Mary recently died. They all live(d) in Dunmar, PA, around Pittston PA.

Giovanni married Concetta and had some kids in PA (my grandma included). I really don't know much more than that, but would like to find out more about Concetta Cali from San Cataldo and Giovanni Parrino from Palermo. My Grandma is around 75, and if Giovanni came over at 19 yrs old, I think he came over around 1930-1935?

Any help would be truly appreciated!!!

WOW! Thank you so much! This is amazing. My grandma asked if I could find out about Giovanni Parrino's mother or siblings. She said that his mom dies when Giovanni was young, but never talked about anything else. On one of the documents you sent me, it said Giovanni came to the US and lived with his uncle, Calogera Buccola, 280 Oak St. Passaic NJ. I wonder if that was his mother's brother (hence the different last name). Again, she lived with Gaspare Parrino at the address you found me in Palermo. Again, I really appreciate this information, it means so much to my Grandma. You don't do Polish genealogy too do you? :-) Grandpa is now asking.

I'm so glad we could find some records for you!

We usually have a working Polish Forum linked on the left side of the page. It appears to be down. If you post your Grandpa's questions under the "Off Topic - We don't only do Italian Genealogy" section of this Forum we may be able to help

This may help with your research of Giovanni's family up to 1902.
Records after 1902 you'll have to write to the comune (example: Giovanni's mother's death record?)
Please excuse the length of this post

Here's the 1920 census for Calogero (Charles) Buccola and his family

You may be able to find their ship manifest at Ellis Island abt 1913
http://stevemorse.org/ellis2/ellisgold.html
hint: don't search using too much information (too many transcription errors), try surname and arrival year?

Perhaps there will be some names on their manifest that your grandmother may recognize?
