Petrone brothers from Trebasacce?

Post by kathykt1 »

I just discovered that on the Ellis Island manifest for my great great uncle Vincenzo Petrone that it had as a location T..cce and I checked and could find a town in Calabria (which I know my family was from) is called Trebisacce. He was born abt 1888 and immigrated in 1902. His older brother Tomaso Petrone was born abt April 1876 and immigrated in 1895.
Tomaso is my great great grandfather. Tomaso was a barber in Brooklyn NY and when he died in 1908 Vincenzo (James) married my great grandmother Teresa and took over the barber shop. Unfortunately, Vincenzo died in 1910 leaving my great grandmother with 5 small children. If anyone can help me learn more or to validate the location where they were from, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you. Kathy

I am wondering if this could be yours. You don't say what the maiden name of your great grandmother Teresa was. Gaetano is one Italian name for the English equivalent Thomas:

Husband Gaeteno Petrone
Birth: , , Italy
Marriage: 19 DEC 1901 Manhattan, New York, New York
His parents: Father: Francesco
Mother: Rosa Melise

Teresa Perri
Marriage: 19 DEC 1901 Manhattan, New York, New York
Bride's parents: Father: Raffaell Perri
Mother: Carmela Petrone

Petrone Gaetano Dec 19 1901 Manhattan 772D (the 772D given as the certificate number must be an error, as I have never seen a letter in the certificate numbers for the marriage records in NYC). This information is from the NYC groom's index

Petrone Teresa Aug 17 1908 Kings 6383 (this is a 1908 marriage for Teresa Petrone in Brooklyn).-certificate #6383.

Petrone Vincenzo Aug 17 1908 Kings cerrtiifcate # 6383

This is Teresa's second marriage. To get the certificate-

The following may be your Gaetano (Thomas)

Petrone Gaetano
birthplace TREBISACCE
birthdate 21/04/1876

This information is from the Archivio di Stato Cosenza which you can access online with a user name and password.

The actual register is online for your viewing once you register. It gives the father's name as Francesco, but the mother's name is given as Rosa Amerise. The information from the www.familysearch.org website with the Manhattan marriage record info is probably incorrect and has a misspelling of the mother's last name.

The Cosenza Archive database is incomplete and I don't see anything else, but you can check on that yourself. The website is free.

I see a 1910 Brooklyn census for

James Petrone, age 22-head of household. a barber, owned the shop
Theresa, age 24, wife
Frank, son, age 6
Thomas, son, age 5
Rosie, daughter, age 3
Raphael, son, age 2

living at 111 Rogers Avenue, Brooklyn

There was also a lodger living with them.

ED655, sheet 2 B

Possibly someone can upload the image for you.

1905 NYS census-which you can view on the familysearch.org pilot website-under New York State-1905 census

The family was living at 111 Rogers Avenue

Petrone Thomas head, age 28, in the U.S. for 12 years, employed as a barber
Teressa, wife, age 19, in U.S. for 17 years, housework
Frankie, son, age 1
Thomas, son, he was an infant-can't make out if he had just been born or how many months he was
James, brother, age 17, in U.S. for three years, barber

There were other families in the same building with the Haas and Kennedy surnames.

http://beta.familysearch.org/

On this family search pilot site (you need to register with a user name and password to view the records), there is a 1900 census with Thomas Petrone. He has two roomers with him, one of whom has the Amerise surname.

He was living at 62 Rogers Avenue born April 1876, age 24, immigration year given as 1893 on this census. He was a barber.

Then there is a Michael Rossi, a roomer, born May 1879, a barber, arrival 1898
Then there is a Thomas Amerise, a roomer, born Sept 1867, arrival 1897, he was a tailor
