Vital records in Itri

Post by iDonna »

Hello,

I am researching my maternal grandparents who came to NY from Itri. Giovanna (nee Ruggieri) Capotosto (b1886) arrived in 1908 with her 2 year old son born in Italy. According to the ship's manifest, my grandfather Paolo Capotosto (b1881) was already in N.Y. I cannot find his arrival; I don't believe the October 2, 1902 entries for both Paolo and Giovanna (on separate pages) are them so I've ruled that out.

I know they were married in 1906, but I do not have a date and I need the marriage license, as well as their birth certificates. Their first son was born in October 1906 in Italy so my guess is that my grandfather came to the U.S. in 1907 or 1908 or get established before he brought his bride and son over.

In searching the LDC, I see that Itri's vital records end in 1865. :( I could possible order the birth records for 1855-65 and perhaps find my GR grandparents Guiseppe Capotosto and Salvatore Ruggieri birthdates but that still leaves a big blank.

Any ideas? I'm stuck and would love to make a breakthough...

Best,

-Donna

Records for Itri after 1865 are held in the Comune of Itri. You should write in Italian to the town enclosing an addressed envelope and a copy of some ID. There are form letters available on line.
If no one on this site can find the boat manifest contact lostquays @ymail .com (no spaces). They can find anything.

Is this your GF and his family?
All of the children were born in NY (according to the census), but the oldest would have been born about 1909... could the first child have died? What was his name?

EDIT: Found the manifest for Giovanna and son Giuseppe Capotosto.
Also - at http://www.italiangen.org I also located this reference to a possible death record (which is why Giuseppe (Joseph) doesn't show up on the 1920 census)
Capotosto Joseph 7 y Feb 11 1914 4645 Manhattan C132

If the family above belongs to you...here is the Naturalization Record for Jennie Capotosto...
Arrival - Boston in 1908.
Born Itri, Caserta, Italy (???)
Husband Paul.
Children listed (all born in US)

It's interesting to note that Jennie applied for Naturalization - there could have been some problem locating a manifest for Paolo when/if he applied :?

Tessa: Very interesting as to why my grandfather may not have been when/if he applied. I never thought of that. I instinctually thought he didn't want to renounce his Italia and chose to not apply.

I have the first Joseph's death certificate from NYC. It states he was born in Italy in October 1906 and died on February 11, 1914. I also have the 1910 census which also has conflicting information but states they've been married for four years...

Will all of these immigration dates on so many different records he would need to have a plane! :)

I will look into writing to Itri. Thank you all for your contributions.
