I can't get anywhere eith my Italian great grandfather

Post by suziwag »

Oral history has it that Nicholas Patrick Plango was born 10/3/1875 and he came from Naples. We all know that it was probably a small town nearby. He supposedly imigrated to NY when he was 5 years old. The first time I find him isn't until he marries in 1895. He said his parents were Giuseppe Plango and Vittoria Tassi. I have searched census, telephone directories, naturalization which gleaned nothing, death records in NYC, etc, to no avail. Obviously the surname was something else, But what???
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

You need his ship manifest and naturalization record. If this board can't help try lostquays@ymail.com

I don't want to be too discouraging, but you are facing a number of problems.

1) "He came from Naples" may simply have meant that "he sailed from Naples" in which case his actual town may have been nearly anywhere in the southern half of Italy

2) The name Plango does not exist in modern Italy and probably never did; quite frankly, I don't have the slightest idea as to what his real name may have been

3) Even if you do find a manifest for Nicola, it is unlikely to be helpful in determining his place of birth - or even last residence - as manifests from before about 1895 did not contain such information

4) Ditto about naturalization records; the very early ones often prove to contain little useful genealogical information

5) The surname Tassi, on the other hand, is quite prevalent in the upper half of Italy as seen here http://www.gens.labo.net/en/cognomi/gen ... nome=TASSI; sometimes a name exists within only a very small area - unfortunately that is not the case with Tassi

6) Even so, there are a number of similar spellings (Taci, Tessi, Tascio, and others) which appear in Italy in small numbers. Vittoria's surname may have really been Tassi or it may not have been

Had you found the naturalization petition? I found this:

Image

Click once to enlarge; click again for maximum magnification.

Note that it gives his birthday as October 3, 1875 and his immigration into the Port of New York on February 10, 1878. It also gives a New York City address at the time the petition was filed in 1898.

As you can see here http://castlegarden.org/search_02.php?m ... ubmit.y=12, a search of the CastleGarden site (Castle Garden was the NY port of entry prior to the opening of Ellis Island in 1892), a search of all persons named Nicola arriving in 1878 does not turn up any likely candidates. Broadening the years searched to 1877-1881 still yields nothing useful.

Have you exhausted all possible family members in your search for details? It is not unusual to find that there is some forgotten aunt, uncle, cousin, who has a treasure trove of old documents stored away in a dusty box in his or her attic. :)

I want to thank all that replied to my post. Yes, I totally agree I am at a difficult point. I have tried all that was mentioned- census, dreaft, deaths, naturalizations. He came at a time when records were not as revealing as they were with Ellis Island.

Just wanted to say I saw a couple of manifest for Plango on the Ellis island site
and these Plango were from Teggiano, Salerno. They may or may not be a relation to
Nicholas Patrick, but I wanted to suggest the following....

If you haven't done this, take the following information
http://tinyurl.com/3m5up26
to a Family History Center
https://www.familysearch.org/locations
and see what you can find out.

The cost is minimal and well worth the time spent.

I see here http://books.google.com/books?id=gfQsAA ... ly&f=false that "plango" is a Latin verb meaning to beat or strike.

Curiouser and curiouser... :)

Both the surname Palangio and the surname Tasillo are found in the town of Frosolone in what was then the Campobasso region of Molise. The films that cover the civil records from 1809 to 1899 are available through the Family History Library. Check http://www.familysearch.org The civill records are birth, death, and marriage records for the town.

This would be a good place to start.

Great work on the part of everyone...Laura, great find!

Grazie Essge...

Just to have a confirmation of the correct lastname I would advice the poster to do also another search..
I noticed on the 1900 census for Nicholas that Edna stated that she was mother of three children among whom only one living (Muriel), then I searched for possible births and deaths of the two other children and one record took my attention:

New York City Births, 1891-1902

Name: Angela Palange
Birth Date: 12 Jan 1897
Birth Place: New York, New York
Certificate Number: 3859

Death: Palange Angiolina 18 m Aug 1 1898 Certificate number: 21171 County Manhattan

Maybe this record worth to be investigated better...

Suziwag, you can contact your nearest Family History Center and ask them to rent these microfilms:

for the birth:

Title Manhattan birth certificates, 1866-1897; birth index cards, 1866- 1897
Authors New York (New York). Department of Health (Main Author)

Birth certificates no. 2076-5050 / 1897 / FHL US/CAN Film 1322347

for the death:

Title Manhattan death certificates, 1866-1919 ; index, 1868-1890 : Works Projects Administration, project no. 265-1-97-28; Work project no. 1
Authors New York (New York). Department of Health (Main Author)

Certificate no. 19601, Catherine Mace, July 18m 1898 - certificate no. 22150, Percy Cameron, Aug. 10, 1898
FHL US/CAN Film 1322947

If the parents names on these certificates match with Nicholas and Edna then the lastname was Palangio for sure and the research on italian records can go on....

I want to thank all that gave me help and tips as to where to find info on Plango. Of course as we well know, there was no such spelling. The Spelling was so massacred each and every time someone recorded it.
I went with some leads that yall gave me and I finally found him.
He was a Plangio. He was from the town of Fosolone, Italy.
I ordered the recrds from the LDS and found his birth name to be Angelo Marie. Vittoria Tsillo was his mother and when she traveled here, he was Nicolini on the ship with here.
Over here Nicholas's last name went from Palangio, to Pilanchi, to Palaccia and Plango.
Thank You all for the help.
