Glongitano
Glongitano
In my research, I found this name for one of my relatives. The first name was listed as Nancy, but I'm sure it was americanized. My guess is Nunzia.
She married Nicholas Saccullo. I expect that Nicholas was also americanized. My guess is Niccolo.
I've found info on the name Saccullo, but not Nicholas or Niccolo. I'm still searching and expect I'll find something sooner or later.
Has anyone seen or heard of the name Glongitano, or something similar to that one? I'm sure it is misspelled and my Italian isn't good enough to try and guess what it should be.
They lived around the late 1800's and early 1900's. She died around 1946. I think he died before she did.

Re: Glongitano
Mary, the Italian version of Nicholas is usually Nicola.
Not sure what the correct spelling of Glongitano might be; the name is so very wrong that there would be a number of possibilities.

Re: Glongitano
This passenger manifest for Nicola Saccullo seems to give his age as 27 and thus birth year 1879, but I believe it is mis-transcribed - the age being 21 and thus birth year about 1885, which would agree with the census posted earlier.

Could she have died before April, 1942? And he outlived her?Mary M wrote: She died around 1946. I think he died before she did.
Normally on the draft registration card, a man would list his wife as the contact person, but Nicola did otherwise...

Nicola/Nicolo's WWI draft card. Note that this time he lists his wife as the next of kin; I can't quite make out the name although the last four characters seem to be "zzia" - I will have to study that some more.
Also, the date of birth varies slightly compared to the WWII card posted above; this is not terribly unusual.

The 1920 census. Nicola's brother "Alfred" is living with them.
Note the daughter "Reda" (Rita; Margherita) aged 2-1/2. It is very likely that this girl died sometime in the next year or so and when Nuncie gave birth soon after to another female child, they named her Rita in honor of the dead child. Again, quite common. That would explain the 1930 census showing a single Rita, aged 5.

I found only one such manifest. In this case, Nunzia Longhitano, aged 20, is travelling with Vito Saitta, aged 30, and Placida Saitta, aged 10. It states that Nunzia is married and implies that she is the wife of Vito. However she clearly is not Placida's mother (she would have been just 10 years old when she was born...).
It is possible that she traveled as Vito's wife only as a means to enter the US. At that time, women and children entering without their husband or father had to prove that they would be able to care for themselves financially and otherwise or they were likely to face immediate deportation.
All in all, it is impossible to say if this is the person who went on to become Nicola's wife. The data adds up pretty well, but there is also some uncertainty.

hi Carmine, it is hard to say if is the right Nunzia; surely, as you said she cannot be the mother of Placida Saitta...; however the her surname spelling is right...
