Domenic Ruggerio (or Ruggiero) family

Post by javabambino »

I am trying to locate my mother-in-law's grandparents and family that came from southern Italy. Her maternal grandfather's name was Dominico Ruggerio b. bet 1875-1885 and grandmother's was Antonetta or Annetta Paplo (Paolo?). They had daughters Frencesca, Stella, Maria Rose (this is m-i-l's mother) b. abt 1903, Carmelina (died in Italy at a young age), and son Andrew (Andro or Andrea). The family immigrated to America sometime between 1910 and 1914 and settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. The family did not come over all at once, but was sent 1 or 2 at a time. I show on the 1930 census in Cincinnati, that Annetta (antonetta) and son Andro immigrated in 1914 to the US (Dominic was deceased by then - died at the age of 40 on Christmas Day year unknown). I believe that Dominic came over first somewhere around 1911 and the daughters came over sometime in between. The name could have been Ruggiero, but it has always been known as Ruggerio here. All I know as far as the region is Calabria - I'm not sure of the town or province on this side of the family (her paternal side of the family, Oliverio, came from Fuscaldo).

Hey Biff, good question
That would explain the mother's name in Cincinnati for this manifest for daughter Stella
- joining mother Antonietta Pissovini
- like the other children in 1920 she leaves an aunt Maria Saveria Paola in Fuscaldo

1922 manifest

3 Jul 1922, SS Guglielmo Peirce, Naples to NY

On this record, father's name may have been a best guess?
Perhaps the death certificate has the informant's name

Thank you all for taking my research to warp speed. I truly appreciate the time you take and the dedication you show in helping families reconnect with their past. What a great service you provide. Keep up the great work! Buon Natale! Julia Minniti

BTW - I found Domenico's record in St. Joe's Cemetery (queried by death date). Name appears as Domenia Riccieri. I will also check to see the connection with the pissavini family and the I am aware of the Mazzei family connection (They own Pompilio's Italian Restaurant - a landmark around these parts - also, the restaurant was used as a locationin the movie "Rain Man" with Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman". Check it out at www.pompilios.com. Thanks again. Julia Minniti

Hello, Ron!

Sorry to not get back with you sooner. I was cleaning out my email and came across yours. I don't know how I missed it.

I am going to give your email address to my husband, Rudy Minniti. He will be so excited to make contact with you. I don't know how many times my mother in law, Cherubina "Irene" Oliverio Minniti, has spoken about her Uncle Andrew and how he gave piano lessons to help support the family while she and her sister where at the Good Shepherd Convent here in Cincinnati (so I guess this makes you first cousins). She was very happy to hear you made contact. Irene is 86 years old and in very frail health but she is always upbeat and never says a mean thing about anything even though I know she's in a lot of pain. I think mentioning your family perked her up a bit.

If you do family research as well, maybe we can compare histories as I am on Ancestry.com. Unfortunately, I had to give up the world deluxe membership and can no longer see international records like I did last year. Hope to hear from you soon. Julia Gants-Minniti
