Look up: Domencio Croce

Post by BenDK »

Wondering if anyone could do a quick look up for me, on:

Domencio Croce

(no known birth/death years)

Parents:

Father: Danato Croce

Mother: Anna Croce (Ranalli)

Known Siblings:

Croce, Vincenzo

b. May 07 1895

Montefino, Italy

d. Apr 1981

Italy

Croce, Antonio

b. Feb 28 1897

Fugento, Italy

d. Dec 29 1972

Hershey, Pennsylvania

Di Blasio (Croce), Caroline

b. 1886

Montefino, Teramo

Possible hints/help:

* Most likely (seems obvious from the other births of his siblings) born in Italy (not sure where at in Italy though)

* Most likely around 1880-1890

* Death: Most likely before 1972, as I believe Antonio Croce was the oldest to survive (though this isn't a guarantee, so Domencio could have lived past 1972).

Thank you very much.

Sadly (and sorry) pretty much all I've put on here, is all I have.

Here is a link to the family tree page for him, if that provides anything more:

Thanks for all the help!

There are a lot of Domenico Croce records at Ancestry.com; even narrowing down to persons born 1880-1890 there is still way too many to figure out which Domenico is yours without additional input.

I have just looked at a bunch of draft registrations in the hope that one will mention his father or mother as next-of-kin, but no luck yet. I will try the same with passenger manifests...

This definitely sounds like the one from my family. His sister (Caroline) married a Di Blasio. And most likely since his brother lived in PA I'd assume Domencio would as well. His mother was also Domenica.

I saw that manifest also, but I thought Domenico's mother was Anna?

Domencio's mother's name:

Croce (Ranalli), Anna Domencia

When making the family tree I had a discrepency with that. My aunt said her middle name was Marie instead of Domencia while my mother claimed her first name was Anna Marie. Both said she only went by Anna as a first name though.

So her first name could have been Anna Marie - her middle name then being Domencia - and then her last name being Ranalli (until getting married, when it would then be Croce).

I'm thinking the manifest listed Domencio is the one, due to him having a sister who married an Antonio di Blasio.

His sister:
(from the family tree page):

Di Blasio (Croce), Caroline

b. 1886
Montefino, Teramo
m. Di Blasio, Antonio

So this really looks like the most likely Domencio.

Ahh, okay; I was paying attention only to your first post which says mother's name is Anna. I didn't look closely enough at your tree posted on the other site.

Looking in the Social Security Death Index http://ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi the only likely candidate (based on year of birth) I find is this one:

Social Security Death Index about Domenico Croce
Name: Domenico Croce
SSN: xxx-xx-xxxx
Last Residence: Massachusetts
Born: 13 Jul 1892
Died: Apr 1964
State (Year) SSN issued: Massachusetts (1952-1955)

If he died after 1962, he should be in the SSDI.

U.S. World War II Draft Registration Cards, 1942 about Domenico Croce

Birth Place: Abbruzze, Italy

By the way, just in case you aren't already aware:

If Anna Maria Domenica Ranalli lived and died in Italy, then her last name was never Croce.

Italian women, then and now, do not change their surname upon marriage. At most, she might have referred to herself as Anna Maria Domenica Ranalli in Croce thus indicating her marital state. However, her legal documents such as passport, ID card, driver's license, etc, etc, would all remain in the Ranalli surname for her entire life.

That is why when searching for a married woman's passenger manifest, you are more likely to find her by searching for her maiden name. If she traveled with children (but not her husband), you will typically find the manifest as:

Smith, Mary
son Jones, William
son Jones, Thomas
daughter Jones, Carol

or something like that. True, it isn't always done this way, but more often than not in my experience.
