Moriscano (Thomas) family in Canosa Italy

Post by plindsey »

Will be visiting Italy from Oct. 7 to Oct. 21. Hoping to meet some of my extended family. My grandfather and grandmother (Thomas Moriscano and Josephine) immigrated to America in 1912. He served in WWII and military records indicate a birthdate of 6/29/1877. Was listed as having lived in Canosa prior to immigration. Possible that the spelling might be off, as some of the first names were changed slightly upon immigration. My father, Patsy (Pascquale)visited Italy about 35 years ago and was planning on retiring there. However, he died before his dream was realized. Any leads would be appreciated.

Hello and welcome! :-)

The surname MORISCANO does not exist in present day Italy...
Perhaps the name was originally spelled MARSICANO?

Can you tell me where in the US Thomas and Josephine lived? Maybe we can trace back through census records...
Names of children would help...

Can you post the WWII registration you speak of? It may provide more clues.

EDIT: I found the WWII card and Thomas has signed his name TOMASO MARSICANO :-)
The top of the card indicates Moriscano :-) - perhaps someone else filled it out for him?

Thomas and Josephine lived in Massachusetts. Their last know address was on Walnut Street, Brockton, Massachusetts. Their children were Rose, Mary, Netta, Sally, Danny, Patsy. One of Thomas' sisters was Anne. She married a DeMarco and they lived on Thorney Lee Terrace in Brockton, MA. I remember when I was a child that my father, and others, pronounced his name more like Morsicano than Moriscano so it's likely that Marsicano was our name. Maybe someone did fill out his paperwork as I know he did not speak English and I'm not sure how far he had gone in school.

This looks like the marriage of Thomas and Josephine listed in the Massachusetts Marriage Index :D

The name is spelled MARSICANO
Marriage occurred on Dec. 27, 1914 in Brockton
Thomas is listed as age 27 (born about 1887), and Josephine as age 20 (born about 1894).
Thomas's first name is incorrectly spelled with a "K"
Parents are listed as Donato (Marsicano) and Maria Farano
Josephine's surname is DIMARCHE (probably DiMarchi)
Her parents are listed as Pasquale (DiMarche) and Laverie Capilletti
Everyone born in Italy
Thomas and Josephine living on Perkins St.

This looks like the family in 1920 Census

Last name was transcribed as "Moxsicano", but you can see that it is spelled "Marsicano"
They are living on Grove St.
Ages match the marriage index. So Thomas was born around 1887 not 1877...
He is working as a laborer for the City Water Dept.
Immigration listed as about 1910, and naturalization papers about 1919.

Hi my name is Wendy. I’ve been casually looking around at family history and I see my grandmother listed on this thread. Rose, daughter of Thomas. She married a couple of times. First to a Wager ( Portuguese , name was changed at Ellis Island to wager from real last name of Cunha )

We only met a couple of people from her family ( Bert and rosemary ) just seeing who else is out there.
