Vincenza (Jennie) Belliti

Post by sciacca100 »

Can anyone help point me in the right direction to locate for my great grandparents. I know my grandmother, Vincenza (Jennie)Bellitti came through Ellis Island on 4/25/1913, and travelled with her father Antonio and sister Paola. I do not know when her mother, Marianna came to the U.S. I would like to locate this information as well as Marianna's maiden name and where she was born, which I think was in Sciacca, Sicily. Where can I find birth and marraige records from Sicily dating back to the 1800's? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Piggy-backing on Paul's find :-)

Here is a possible marriage listing in Boston in 1915 for daughter Anna Bellitti...
Address on North Square (same street listed in the manifest)seems to be that of the church.
Father is ANTONINO BELLITTI and mother is GIOVANNA FAUCI :-)

If your sure thats where there from the best bet is to get film records from Family History Library for Sciacca (Agrigento), 1820-1929 which contains Births, marriages, banns, deaths, citizenship records, miscellaneous records from the civil registration office in Sciacca, Agrigento, Italy. Before you start writing to Italy for records.

Paul –
I got the name Marianna from my only living aunt who thought this may have been her grandmother’s name. I think she was mistaken and her grandmother’s name was Giovanna. I remember my mother mentioning the name Fauci as I think she had an aunt who never married. She was sure of her grandfather’s name as being Antonino so I know this is definitely them because the children’s name match with what I have.
I am just a little confused about the Rosa’s name on both manifests. One shows Rosa arriving on 10/22/1912, on the Santa Ana with her mother, Giovanna Fauci. The other shows Rosa arriving on 4/25/1913, on the San Guglielmo with her father, Antonio Bellitto. Was it common for the wife to use her maiden name when travelling? I’m not sure why Giovanna would use Fauci instead of Bellitto. I do know the name is incorrect and was Bellitti as stated on my grandmother’s birth certificate.

Tessa –
Thank you for Anna’s record of marriage and info re: my great grandfather, Antonino and his parents names. Wow – my great, great, grandparents! I do know Antonino died on 5/7/1947 at the age of 85yrs. according to cemetery records I have and that matches up with what you sent.

Marty – I’m sure they were from Sciacca, Agrigento, Italy. Thank you for forwarding all of the links for me to research.

Thank you all so much! Sorting through all of the names, places and dates will keep me busy for a bit. It certainly can get confusing. I want to get all of the correct data as my goal is to enter this information into a family history book and create a power point presentation for all of my nieces and nephews. Thanks again! :D

Tessa,

Would you happen to know the year Pelligrino Bellitti travelled with Giovanna Fauci to the U.S.? Also, Pelligrino would be Antonino's older brother and their parents were Pellogrino (Sr) Bellitti and Ann Fazio, right?

Thanks,

Lois

Hi Lois,

I will look for that manifest for Giovanna. :-)

Here is a possible manifest for Pellegrino in June 1910 arriving Boston on the SS Romanic
He is 18, and leaving mother Maria in Sciacca.
He is traveling to uncle Antonino Faucio, 1 North Square in Boston.

Giovanna Fauci, with daughters Rosa and Anna Bellitti, arrived in NOVEMBER of 1912 on the SS Canada...

Some confusion may lie in the manifests Paul posted above...
The first (SS Sant' Anna) is the 1912 ship they DID NOT sail on. That is why the names are crossed off...
However, the DETAINED PASSENGERS list for which Paul provided a link is for the SS Canada, and they DID sail on that ship.
I will try to locate the actual manifest for the Canada :-)

Found the manifest on http://www.ellisisland.org
Anna, age 17; Rosa, age 7; and Giovanna - age 40.
Leaving husband/father ANTONINO BELLITTI in Sciacca
Going to son/brother PELLEGRINO BELLITTI at 1 North Square in Boston.

If this link doesn't work - go right to http://www.ellisisland.org and search by ship
CANADA, arriving Nov. 8, 1912 from PALERMO

Hi Tessa,

I understand now what Paul sent. Rosa & Anna Bellitti traveled with their mother Giovanna Fauci on the SS Canada in November 1912. I wonder why they were detained and unable to travel in October 1912? Could it have been because they were ill? And, they were going to visit Pellegrino who was Giovanna's brother-in-law who arrived in 1910, right? I'm still confused as to whether Maria or Ann Fazio was the mother of Antonino and Pelligrino. All of what you sent helps me a great deal, Tessa. Thank you so much for your help.

I wonder why they were detained and unable to travel in October 1912? They weren't DETAINED in October, they just didn't sail. Might not have made it to the ship in time, or as you said, illness. We'll probably never know. Could it have been because they were ill?
And, they were going to visit Pellegrino who was Giovanna's brother-in-law who arrived in 1910, right? Pellegrino was Giovanna's SON. He arrived in 1910 and joined Giovanna's brother Antonio Fauci, who was his UNCLE :-)
I'm still confused as to whether Maria or Ann Fazio was the mother of Antonino and Pelligrino. This you will have to confirm with the actual birth records from the comune. The LDS microfilms should hold the answers to many of your questions. (and probably create more :-) )
All of what you sent helps me a great deal, Tessa. Thank you so much for your help.
You're welcome!

The way I read the records we've found...
Pellegrino Bellitti is Antonino Bellitti's SON (see the 1913 manifest for Antonino and daughters Paola, Rosa and Vincenza.)
Antonino states that he is joining his wife Giovanna and SON Pellegrino.
Antonino's father's name is Pellegrino, and following the Italian naming tradition he named his son Pellegrino.

1910 - Pellegrino arrives and joins UNCLE Ant. Fauci in Boston
1912 - Giovanna arrives with daughters to join son Pellegrino in Boston
1913 - Antonino arrives with daughters to join wife Giovanna and son Pellegrino in Boston
:-D

Tessa,

I got it now. I seem to remember my relatives mentioning something about my grandmother having a brother who died very young. This must have been Pelligrino. This is so interesting. It looks as if Rosa first travelled with her mother, Giovanna in 1912. It looks like Rosa must have returned to Italy sometime between 1912-1913 with someone else then travelled back to the U.S. in 1913 with her father, Antonino according to the manifest.
