Trying to break through a brick wall: E/Asposito, Ingoglia

Post by emarie »

Hi there!

I have been searching for a very long time with no luck on finding information on my great grandfather. My grandfather's name was Joseph Asposito (1925-1996). His father went by "Novio", but this was a nickname, his birth name may have been James according to my dad. This search is tricky because our last name changed upon his arrival at Ellis Island, from "Esposito" to "Asposito". Novio's wife's name was Grace Ingoglia. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Esposito was a surname given to foundlings. It was very common in the Naples area but also in many other parts of Italy. Even if you find trace of them in Italy at some point the line will end with an abandoned baby.

Can you post this manifest?

And a few questions...
What years did "Novio" and Grace immigrate?
Where did they settle in US?
What were their children's names?

Found a POSSIBLE 1930 Census for James and Grace Esposito...

Name was horribly misspelled on the census as ESPICTS - and transcribed that way :?

1930 United States Federal Census
about James Espicts
Name: James Espicts
Birth Year: abt 1899
Birthplace: Italy
Home in 1930: Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan
View Map
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's Name: Grace Espicts
Occupation: salesman - grocery
Household Members:
Name Age
James Espicts 31
Grace Espicts 45
Josephine Espicts 14
Joseph Espicts 4

Looking at the census, it appears that "James" immigrated in 1920, and Grace in 1907.
She is 45 and he is 31 years of age in 1930, putting his DOB at about 1899 and hers at about 1885.
It would appear that the son, Joseph, age 4, could be your GF - born in Michigan :-)
Josephine is listed as "stepdaughter" and born in Illinois, which would indicate that Grace was married before. Maybe INGOGLIA was her married name? before marrying James?
James indicates he married at age 25... so they were married for about 6 years in 1930.
The census also states that Grace is Naturalized...

Address was 711 Ionia Ave, Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan.

I believe that Frank Scimonelli ( Francesco Scimonelli) last residence:
Montevago ( Agrigento province, Sicily, IT), well he was born around the 1843;

he was married at Giuseppa( Josephine) maiden name Li Manni;

I found a trip and detained alient record, abt Francesco Scimonelli with a adopted son:
Michele Liberale age 9;
both joining at Giuseppa Li Manni in 149 Central Ave Brooklyn, New York, NY

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 about Francesco Scimonelli
Name: Francesco Scimonelli
Arrival Date: 27 May 1903
Birth Year: abt 1844
Age: 59
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/Race¬/Nationality: Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure: Napoli
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Liguria

Birth Date: 5 Jul 1893

born in Salaparuta, living with the mother....

Grazia Scimonelli and Provvidenza Scimonelli ( maybe her cousin), trip:
New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 about Grazia Scimonelli
Name: Grazia Scimonelli
Arrival Date: 19 Oct 1899
Birth Year: abt 1879
Age: 20

Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Spartan Prince

coming from Montevago, joining at mother Giuseppa Li Manni ( maiden name) in Brooklyn, New York, NY

I believe that this Grazia is Grazia married at James Esposito
(changed in Asposito in USA); her birth year must be 1879 right...
just my two cents...

Hi suanj! BRAVA! :D

I think you are RIGHT! and your "two cents" is worth "a million bucks!"

That certainly looks like the Grace that married James Esposito/Asposito.

another sister of Grace( Grazia) Scimonelli was Maria Scimonelli

in travel with Gaspare Governale 38 old, ( son in law of Giuseppa Li Manni Scimonelli) and with little Cristoforo Colombo brother ( maybe step brother of Scimonelli sisters, as Michele Liberale) and all joining at Giuseppa Li Manni Scimonelli in Brooklyn, NY
Image

all the records just for understand better the family members; it very possible that Grace Scimonelli married at a Ingoglia, but where??

However abt James Esposito son of Onoftio Esposito and Antonia nee Belfiore we must know the right first name: James.. maybe Vincenzo?? the birthplace could be Acerra?? we can find a Esposito born around 1899 father Onofrio and mother Antonia or Antonietta Belfiore....
just my suggestion....

suanj

It is possible that Grace married "Mr. Ingoglia" in Illinois, since that is where the daughter Josephine (age 14 in the 1930 census) was born... :-)
What do you think?

Found these births in the Cook County Clerk's Listing...
The "1917" date seems more likely for a possible match with Grace's daughter?

INGOGLIA, JOSEPHINE Birth 6016845 3/17/1922
INGOGLIA, JOSIE Birth 6015573 5/7/1917

Hello, suanj!

Could it be that the ANTONIA SCIMONELLI you referenced above in Giuseppa LiManni's manifest is actually Grace and not a sister?

I say this because I found this marriage record from BROOKLYN...
Could this be Grace and the first husband INGOGLIA? Unless the sisters both married with Ingoglia?

Scimonella Antonia Jan 24 1901 Kings Cert# 518
Ingogliaco Giuseppe Jan 24 1901 Kings Cert# 518

Edit:
Just looked at the manifest for Antonino/Antonina di Francesco - it is a male

Dear Tessa, Grazia is not Antonia; they was sisters; here the arrival of Grazia Scimonelli in my orevious post:

Grazia Scimonelli and Provvidenza Scimonelli ( maybe her cousin), trip:
New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 about Grazia Scimonelli
Name: Grazia Scimonelli
Arrival Date: 19 Oct 1899
Birth Year: abt 1879
Age: 20

Gender: Female
Ethnicity/Race¬/Nationality: Italian
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Spartan Prince

coming from Montevago, joining at mother Giuseppa Li Manni ( maiden name) in Brooklyn, New York, NY
http://postimage.org/image/72h9vls97/

abt
INGOGLIA, JOSIE Birth 6015573 5/7/1917
Cook County, Illinois, Birth Certificates Index, 1871-1922
about Josie Ingoglia Name: Josie Ingoglia
Birth Date: 7 May 1917
Birth Place: Chicago, Cook, Illinois
Gender: Female
Father Name: John Ingoglia
Father's Age: 31
Mother Name: Jennie Sciroppo
Mother's Age: 29
FHL Film Number: 1276315

the mother name is no Grace Scimonelli; who know where Josephine.... stepdaughter of James A/Esposito wwas born? on the 1930 census her birthplace is Illinois...

However abt James Esposito we have just the probable birth year; and parent's names...

my first idea was that James (US first name used for Italian Vincenzo) was born in Acerra ( Naples province, IT)

and , by LDS * I found the military draft card of Vincenzo ESPOSITO born in Acerra on 10 june 1898, son of Onofrio ESPOSITO and Antonia BELFIORE
(* Italy, Napoli, Acerra, Civil Registration (Comune), 1809-1929
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... Fwaypoints )

Image

as a well the birth act:

Image
Vincenzo Esposito was born at home: Via Maddalena, 5 Acerra (5 Maddalena st, Acerra) the informant was the midwife, because Onofrio was at work...

so we must find the arrival of Vincenzo Esposito born in Acerra on 1898...

hugs,
suanj
