Looking for Arrival Information

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Looking for Arrival Information

Post by RASALVATO »

Hi
I am looking for the Passenger Listing information for my Grandfather, Thomas Salvato or any way to track the town of his birth in Italy. He came from Italy in 1875, I can't confirm a passenger list or port of departure, but guessing would be Naples. He was born on Oct 30 1872, so he was a child coming across with his mother Antonia. His father would have been Vincenzo. The census indicates the Mother was a widow in 1900 census records at age 59. I can't locate him/her on the 1890 census. I found naturalization in 1892.

I can find no record of Vincenzo. Antonia indicates 7 children, 3 living, yet I know of no siblings for my Grandfather, ever and we lived together till his death in 1966. I can find no death record for Antonia and she is no longer listed on the census of 1920.

How do I go about closing in on Antonia's death records, Vincenzo's information and the siblings listed. Its hard to conceive that a mother would leave 3 children behind or maybe Vincenzo came ahead with the other two.

Any help/guidance will be appreciated

Long shot 1877 ship manifest, see line 20 Tommaso Salvato, age 6 traveling with older sister Domarico (Domenica?), age 18 and mother M. (Maria) Antonia Regnavella?, age 50.
Immigration year matches that on 1910 census and Antonia's age of 80 on the 1910 census puts her year of birth about 1830, somewhat close to the approximate yob 1827 on the manifest. Also if Tomasso's other sibling was older, he/she might not have emigrated.

I believe that I found the birth record (#227) of:

Tommaso SALVATO born in Padula (Salerno province, IT) on 30 oct 1870,
born at home, address: San Francesco st,
son of Antonia ACQUAVELLA 35 old farmer (daughter late Michele) wife of Michele Vincenzo SALVATO 40 old, farmer;
the informant was the midwife Maria Santomauro 64 old

WOW!!! I know the census info is correct. It is the home I lived in growing up in Brooklyn. The names are my aunts/uncles/Dad. That said, Acquavella is a name known to me. He is/was the family 'undertaker'. He handled all the funerals. Padula is also a bell ringer. Some where in the past this came up as a family origin, but in my ignorance I thought it was Padua. The dates seem off, but seems to fit.

THANKS SO MUCH AND SO FAST. How did you find the ship manifest? SuanJ I will be contacting you thru your website, i am sure all the info on contacts and fees will be there. thanks so much, sincerely, thanks.

Ralph,
I am sure abt the birth act...
Acquavella is a surname of Padula as a well Salvato also... so by Padula civil records, I found Tommaso birthact;
the 1870 birthyear is correct;
Tommaso, on the ship's manifest ( hi Biff!) was 6 old, so born around 1870/1; and in effects he was born on 1870...
All the best,
suanj

Re: Looking for Arrival Information

Hi I'm back again with another request for help

On the ship manifest that Bill found last week...1877 with Tomasso, Antonia, and Domenica.
I was able to verify that the spelling on the manifest is Domenica, born in March 1859 in Padula. There is a 4th name under that I am interested in. Stepping down from antonia Acquvella, Domenica, Tomasso, there comes an 11 year old. I interpret it as Antonio. Can't make out the next word. It appears, getting some death certificates from NYC just today, that Anthony was the brother of Tomasso [thomas], my grandfather who buried him in 1942 and the age fits and the immigration on census records fit as well.

If this name is antonio, that would explain the third child, but I cannot decipher the last name for this 11 yearold. Can you help with it? Is it salerno, where they came from? Is it a middle name?

any suggestions appreciated.

There are no records of departures from US to Italy, unfortunately :-(

You have this return from Italy in 1945?
