Researching Trupiano Family

Post by saucybgl »

Hello, my name is Krista, and I've just started researching my family history. After speaking with my Grandmother, Josephine Verli (formerly Josephine Trupiano), I've been able to find out my Great Grandfather's name was Michael Trupiano, born February 1890, and I also know that his father was Rocco Tropiani, born August 1859.

I was able to confirm all of the above using the 1900 U.S. Federal Census Record.

Also, from this record I then found out that Michael's sister is Annie Tropiani, born August 1884. Also that Rocco's wife was Nunzia Tropiani, born July 1869.

From the 1900 census, I know that Rocco, Nunzia and Annie all came from Italy. Michael appears to be the first child born in the United States.

I think the, New York Passenger List 1820-1857 for the ship "Caledonia" might be the ship that Rocco traveled on based upon his age on the ship record. It also says the trip traveled from Napoli. I'm not sure if this is the right record because Nunzia and Annie were not with him on the ship.

If anyone can help me learn more it would be great!
Thank you,
Krista

Hello Krista! :D

Those early manifests do not hold much information... but I think I have found a possibility for your ancestors' arrival manifest. :-)

Arriving on 3 June 1886 at New York on SS OLYMPIA
R. Tropiano, age 28 (this would put his birth about 1859-60)
A. Tropiano, age 21 (This could be Nunzia - first name actually Annunziata)
A. Tropiano, age 9 mos (Probably Anna, born about 1884-5)
Although they are all listed as Males, I believe that this is the family...
However, Italian women usually travel under their maiden name :?

From the NYC Birth Index... POSSIBLE record for Michael Trupiano.
Though the birth date is slightly different from the 1900 Census...

Trupiano Michael Oct 2 1889 Cert# 19878 S Manhattan

You can request this from NYC

Thank you for finding this information, Tessa! How were you able to determine this ships name, I don't see anything on the attachment except a list of names.

Would there be any reason for them to have incorrectly listed the women as men?

I wish I knew more information that I could share, that would help make this research easier.

I've also been very interested in learning more about my Grandfather's lineage. His name was John Verali. I don't know much about his history either. Should I start another thread for him or just continue here?

Thanks again for your help so far!

Would there be any reason for them to have incorrectly listed the women as men? Human error in a monotonous routine?

The image that is posted above was viewed on Ancestry (paid subscription) which gives the arrival date and ship name in the heading of the page (not the image) :-)

Sending for the birth record of Michael will provide you with Nunzia/Annunziata's maiden name which will give you another way to research their arrival :-)

As for your Grandfather's ancestors... I would definitely start a new post. More volunteers here at the forum will see!

Rocco Trupiano

from Italian Genealogical Group (good source for NYC record indexes)
http://www.italiangen.org/default.htm
the same form T :D linked earlier can be used for Death Certificates
http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/vi ... eath.shtml

Rocco Trupiano's Death Certificate may include his parents' names and place of birth
- it depended upon what the informant knew or could remember

Surname Given Name Age Month Day Year Certificate Number County Born FHL roll
number

Tropiano Rocco 71 y Jun 8 1936 12815 (1936) Kings 1864 - 1865 2080436

Hey Valarie! :D

Great finds! Thanks!

But it looks like the 1886 manifest I posted may not be them (unless the census data is inaccurate - as we've seen many times before! :-) )
The birthdates for Rocco and Nunzia are definitely off in the 1892 record...

That death record for Rocco HOPEFULLY holds some parent names/place of birth for Krista!

Wow! I don't know what to say! Thank you all so much!! You've given me so much information to digest. Each of you are wonderful :D

I'm going to show all of this information to my Grandmother and see what she can help me confirm.

I'm sorry that I can't tell you right now which of these are true and false for my family, but I'll do what I can to find out which one's are my family.

I can't thank you all enough, I'll post again as soon as I have a chance to talk to my grandmother. I'll confirm what I can for you :-)
