Forno family in Piedmont Italy

Post by mjc »

My grandmother, Goldie Forno was born in Piedmont Italy on 01/11/1897. Her father's name was Ermegildo Forno, and her mother was Effisia - but we do not know her maiden name. Does anyone have access to the records that could provide more information on Goldie. We only know her as Goldie, yet it might be a nickname?

Hi and welcome

There are two matches for Ermenegildo Forno
in Ellis Island records (and don't mind the misspelling, the original manifests read in both cases "Ermenegildo")
In 1901

First Name: Eruvenigildo
Last Name: Forno
Ethnicity: Italy, Italian
Last Place of Residence: Torino
Date of Arrival: Nov 09, 1901
Age at Arrival: 31 Gender: M Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: Phoenicia
Port of Departure: Boulogne
Manifest Line Number: 0002

And then in 1908
First Name: Enneuegildo
Last Name: Forno
Ethnicity: Italy, Italian North
Last Place of Residence: Leechburg, USA
Date of Arrival: Oct 31, 1908
Age at Arrival: 31y Gender: M Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: La Lorraine
Port of Departure: Havre
Manifest Line Number: 0021

(if you read the original manifest youl'l see that the age given is 38, so it is the same person)

Is this your ancestor?

Outstanding! Could you check for any birth records for the daughter Goldie? Again, I think that will be a nickname. She was born on 01/11/1897 to Ermegildo and Effisia Forno.

Efisia Quilico aged 29 arrived at Ellis Island in 1903 to join husband Ermenegildo Forno. With her there were three children Guglielmina, aged 6 (thus born in 1897)Lucia aged 4, Pietro aged 2. There were registered under the surname Quilico, but there is no doubt that they were the children of Ermenegildo
This is the link to the original manifest
http://www.ellisisland.org/search/shipM ... 2679110226
Italian woman always kept they maiden surname even after their marriage. When they traveled with their children often immigration clerks registered them with the same surname of the mother,
So I think your grandmother Goldie Forno was in fact named Guglielmina.
This is the current italian spelling of the name, feminine of Guglielmo "William". In the manifest it was misspelled "Gulgliemina"

:D Thanks Marty!
And for mjc: with the parents' name and the date of birth you can send a letter to the comune of Villadeati asking for the birth certificate (estratto dell'atto di nascita) of Goldie/Guglielmina
