VALENTI (VALENTE) FAMILY OF PALERMO, SICILY (OR THEREABOUTS)
VALENTI (VALENTE) FAMILY OF PALERMO, SICILY (OR THEREABOUTS)
I have just begun my research on the Valenti family, my family, from Sicily. Our United States information is complete, and I will now begin on the old country - AKA "the other side".
Our Valenti's emigrated in 1896 from Palermo to New York. Once there, they lived on Elizabeth Street in Little Italy, where my great-grandfather was a butcher. They lived above the butcher shop until about 1907 - 1908, when they moved to Lodi, New Jersey. By 1910, they owned their own home in this town, where they lived until my great-grandmother's death in 1942 and my great-grandfather's in 1963. Their children who survived were - in chronological order - Antonina (Lena), Petrina (Beatrice), Pietro (Pete), Andrea (Henry), Charlie, Nancy, Joseph (John) and Michael. I have always known (as has the aforementioned siblings) my great-grandparents to be named Petrina ( also known as Beatrice) and Nunzio (also known as James.) But nowhere can I find passage records for them, and can only assume that they traveled under different names.
If anyone out there knows anything about my family - or has suggestions regarding Sicilian research - please let me know.
Thanks so much,
N.

This message was edited with the following information, Nunzio and Beatrice were married about 1893 per the census. Also, per the 1903 census, Nunzio Petitioned for Naturalization. Therefore, you should find his Naturalization Records as well as his Death Certificate at the New Jersey State Archives.
I hope this helps for now.

Re: VALENTI (VALENTE) FAMILY OF PALERMO, SICILY (OR THEREABO
You are a genius, mfjp. You have discovered a lot more than I have.
I don't think the Bettina Viscardi reference is correct. As my great-grandmother was born in 1870 (or before - she was actually older than my grandfather, but wouldn't admit it), she would not be 18, and she was from Sicily.
The Innocenza reference almost gave me a heart attack! I thought that was it, and my hands were shaking as I linked to the site! But if it is him, where is his wife? They certainly traveled together. I wish the manifest had more infor - like town of origin. But it is the closest lead I have and I owe it to you. I never thought to use a variation of his first name.
Thank you so, so much.
