Rank on military record

Post by TerryM »

Please help me figure out if there is a rank listed for Pasquale Marasco in this record. I submitted it back in May and got lots of help from this forum but forgot to ask about the rank.

He was a "guardia", that means, I think, he was of the lowest rank. If in the Army, he would have been a "private"

The lowest rank in the Italian army is SOLDATO (soldier).. Guardia is GUARD position and not a n army rank unless it is a euphemism for local policeman. Peter

"Already Guardia di Finanza (financial police guard) branch of earth - serial number 4904 - Skillful - enlisted in the firts category without a medical examination in accordance with Article 51 of the Royal Decree 5 January 1908, number 27. The decision regarding the allocation to the third category, for which there are not still documents, is sent back to the supplementary sittings.
First category 28 July 1908. Confirmed enrollment in the first category. The application for assignment to the third category was rejected for lack of titles"

I just noticed that there is an additional date of 23 April 1908 in one of the bottom columns. He was confirmed in the 1st category on 28 July 1908 which is after that date so what does the April date represent? Thank you for your help! This may be more of an Italian document question rather than a translation question.

CAPOREALE which is the first step up from SOLDATO. You would have to obtain a copy of his provincial Military REGISTRO DI RUOLO which contains the details of his military service which should account for the two dates in April and July. Possibly there was a temporary upgrade prior to a permanent promotion to CAPOREALE. Peter

I did not review any document relating to Pasquale Marasco but responded to your request for ranking in the Italian Army. His record was reviewed 19 times and my computer was unable to bring it up on my screen. I only responded to your inquiry regarding ranking in the Italian Army. Only his Registro di Ruolo would be able to verify the ranking(s) he attained. Peter

Just want to point out he first served in the "Guardia di Finanza", and then in the "Esercito". In the "Guardia di Finanza" the first step, today called "finanziere", once was "guardia". Peter is right when he says in the "Esercito" (Army), the first step is "soldato semplice".
