Cannizzaro in Palermo

Post by sleone1981 »

I am at a dead end with my great great grandfather, Agostino Cannizzaro.

I know his name from my great grandmother's death certificate. She was born in NYC September 1, 1898. I cannot locate a birth certificate.

Her mother, Rosa Maria Zorbo, was born (1861) and had her first marriage (to Giuseppe Scaccia) in Caltavuturo. She immigrated to the USA in 1893 with her daughter from that first marriage.

I cannot find a marriage record for Agostino and Rosa in either Caltavuturo, or any of the New York City boroughs. I cannot find a travel or immigration record for Agostino. I have very little information from my family to go on....all they know is that he died in an unknown location in Italy in 1928. They also say the family travelled frequently between NYC and Palermo when my great grandma was young. I can't find travel records to support that.

I am at a loss as to where else to look. Does anyone know of towns near Caltavuturo where Cannizzaro is a common name?

The neighboring towns are Polizzi Generosa, Scillato and Sclafani Bagni.

If you search the surname on the link below, you get a list of towns from which individuals with the surname immigrated. Unfortunately, I don't see any of the above towns on the list,.

try this link and type in surname if above link doesn't work-

Cannizzaro is a name that occurs a lot in Reggio Calabria. I think I can even say it is one of the names typical for that town. Your greatgrandfather could be from there. If you search with google: "cannizzaro, agostino" site:www.benvanrijswijk.com you wil find al lot of them on my website

For what it is worth, I came across two children Rosa Scaccia age 5 and Maria Scaccia age 9i arriving on the SS Aller on September 20,1899 (it easy to mistake 3 & 9) arriving at NY from Caltavuturo. with no mention of grandmother Rosa? Peter
