My grandmother, Maria Antonia Fariello (born February 7, 1903, and her sister, Pasqua Camilla Fariello, emigrated together to America, arriving at Ellis Island on april 15, 1921. The Ellis Island documents state that they left from the town of Grumo Appula (which is in Bari, Puglia, Italy). I have the birth and death records of their father, Rocco Fariello (1863 - 1944) indicating that he was born and died in Grumo Appula. Their mother, Filomena Scarola (1863 - ?), was also born in Grumo Appula. Therefore, I thought that I could easily find the birth records of my grandmother and my aunt in the digitalized records for Grumo Appula which are easily available on line. However, they are not there even though those birth years (1899 and 1903) are there. I checked other years and they weren't there either. Here are the links with the birth records for those years:
1899 - http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... Nati/1899/
1903 -

Can anyone find them?
I also have a "family" record that may aid this search, sent to me from Grumo Appula that has their parents and older siblings, but not them. Here is the link for that:

I do have a question on the wife from this record. It does not have her death record, but the very last column for her on this form indicates something occurred in 1935. Can anyone translate that for me?

Re: Where are their birth records
Of course it's always possible they were missed from the index. It is always possible they were missed from the second copy that was sent to the Tribunale. Maybe they were born in another town (like Torrito)
Have you tried writing to the town for the records?

Re: Where are their birth records
When you say "Ellis Island documents" do you mean the record created on the Ellis Island website, or the the actual copy of the ship manifest?rp76226 wrote:My grandmother, Maria Antonia Fariello (born February 7, 1903, and her sister, Pasqua Camilla Fariello, emigrated together to America, arriving at Ellis Island on april 15, 1921. For most ship manifests after 1906 or so, there are 2 fields to look at with respect to place of origin; on page 1, (usually column 10) the passenger is asked for country and city of last permanent residence, on page 2 (usually column 29) is where you can find country and city of "place of birth".
Have you checked both pages of the ship manifest? The place of birth listed on the manifest hopefully is accurate and will help direct your search.

Terral Avoro - Both the place of birth and the residence say Grumo Appula.
Re: Where are their birth records
The Torrito records are also online. Their birth records are not found there. In all cases, I have looked at both the index and also the actual birth records (since our family knows their actual dates of birth) which are listed in chronological order in each town's records.
Re: Where are their birth records
Livio, I suspected that might be the case, but it seemed so unusual for the time period. Since there is no note that her husband moved to Torritto, and the document shows that he died 9 years later in Grumo Appula, I guess that I must conclude that their marriage ended in permanent separation. Unfortunately, the available Torritto death records end in 1929 so I cannot find her death record.

You need to write to the town. If the women were residents there (without having been born there) they may be able to tell you the place of birth.
