I know it's at a distance from Ariano but I think the groom's place of birth is Taranto (Taranto Province), Puglia region. Not sure about mother's surname.

when i searched in avitrees, crusca came up in buccheri and in muro lucano.clearly neither is the town in which he was born. and various combos of "santo" were unproductive. i also considered taranto.
thanks for your help.

I'm also reading Taranto for the birth place.

Mother's surname - very tricky - Capastrada could be a possibility but I'm reading Capassa.../Capasso...

Are there any 1841 banns or allegati on the film that might show the name more clearly?

I was just considering the possibility of the groom's surname being Cursio to see if that would open any other possibilities for the mother's surname, but I'm striking out on that. I also just searched the one town in Taranto on the antenati website, even to see if I could find his birth record, but no luck with that. I searched some of the other indices in that town to look for something similar to the mother's surname, and even used the search names for Taranto and came up empty handed with that too. Anyway, I'm going out to walk my several miles now and will try to brainstorm more later.

i posted this just a bit ago and it doesn't show up on the feed. don't know what i did wrong.......

angela, you got me rethinking.....there is no allegati for this year. i went back thru the index and found the entry - it was in the B section, not C.

i see Cocca, Caterina. Cocca is a name in Ariano. i wonder if the letters b/f her name is 'fu' because she is deceased.

also, i really enlarged the image of the marriage act. the last couple of letters of her name are actually the beginning of the word defunta, which continues on the next line. so, i'm thinking Cocca.

My two cents... :D

The surname of groom looks like Ciasca - found in Taranto.
But that is definitely a "B" for the initial letter in the index :?

Mother's surname in index does look like Cocca.

Okay, so now, in the record, I am reading Capassa def (deceased). Looking at the brides father's name in the record it has Filippo defunto (deceased). In the index, yes, I see groom's mother's name reads fCocca Caterina (deceased) and I read bride's father is fFilippo (deceased). So there is error with the groom's mother's surname somewhere. I believe that the error would be in the index and not in the record. So, groom's mother's name: I'm going with Caterina Capassa (deceased). (I'm using my laptop at the moment which isn't as clear. Will have another look though when I'm able to connect to another screen.)

angela,
i am just seeing this. did not know you made a post.

so, to cover all bases in my database, her name now reads Caterina Cocca-Ciasca-Capassa....thanks again for all your efforts!

I know you want to put this to rest, but I think that the correct surname is Capassa, as suggested by Angela for the following reasons-
1. The groom was from Taranto and his father was living in Naples. I doubt the deceased mother would have a surname from Ariano, although I could be wrong.
2. more importantly, you can see where the d that starts the word defunta (deceased) is. There are more than 5 letters preceding that letter d. I see 7 letters in total, which is why I believe that Angela's suggestion is the correct one. At any rate, I think you can eliminate the surname Cocca for just that reason, or you'll have to come up with a suggestion as to what is written in between the ending letter "a" in Cocca and the beginning of the word defunta.
