Where to start?

Post by michaelPiacentini »

I'm looking for info on my grandfather, Mario Piacentini who came to the US at the age of 9 in 1929. He came into Ellis Island and somehow ended up in Bridgeport CT.
Supposedly his father was an orphan and the last name was one he chose because of the area they were from.
I have no info on his mother whatsoever.
He passed away in 1990 and now my grandmother is very ill and I'm hoping to find some info somehow, someway.
Just asking where I could start looking for birth records, ships manifest(can't get anywhere through Ellis isle records but his name is inscribed on wall), and of course relatives.

Thank you,
Michael Piacentini

A 1930 census record exists of a Mario Piacentini...

Name: Mario Piacentini
Age: 11
Estimated birth year: abt 1919
Relation to head-of-house: Son
Father's Name: Angelo Piacentini
Mother's Name: Concetta Piacentini
Home in 1930: Manhattan, New York, New York

Siblings are Dante, Vanda, Philip, Vero...

What is odd though... a manifest exists for M. Concetta Covelli who travels with Dante, Elena, Filippo, and Salvatore.. who's husband is Angelo Piacentini... from the town of Esperia...

BUT... I did not see Mario on the list though... the 1930 census record info of this particular family has him born in Italy...

A manifest also exists for Angelo...

If this is the correct family, I could link all this info for you...

Please note that there is also another Mario Piancentini on this record near bottom of page... he could be the same person that Wldspirit (hey you!!) posted earlier (born 1889)... Angelo's younger brother?... lots to look into!

Wild spirit thanks but that's not him.
I know he was born in Italy and his ship came in 1929.
Also on the ship were my wife's 2 grandfathers, Chester Montini and Domenick Marini.
That leads me to believe that if Angelo was a connection, he would've been an uncle or cousin. Not sure on that 1.
It's amazing that me and my wife met 70 years later and her grandfather Marini and mine lived 2 streets away from each other and knew each other their entire lives. Her grandfather passed several years ago but was ill when I knew him and had little memory left.

Thank you so much all of you,
Mike Piacentini

Ok here is what I just found from my Aunt.
My Grandfather's dad's name was Salvatore. He also came with his mother who's first name was Millie, probaly short for something which might be M. Concetta.

Where did you get the ship's info from?? Was it documented or was it "hear-say"...

How were the names transcribed.... for example "Chester"... Cesidio?

I could look these up on Ancestry.com... but your info would save me some time!

There are a few Domenico Marini's out there... any birthyears for the Marini's

And for sure... Mario, Chester and Domenico travelled on the same boat?? Same voyage??

This certainly makes research exciting for you and your wife.. could you imagine having a boat record that shows all 3.. you could end up with 2 ship records...

mfjp

further edit... there is a Salvatore on the 1930 record...

also.. the other record that Wldspirit posted is of Mario S. Piacentini... I think it still could be him... the initial could be Salvatore... and I can see why Wldspirit was asking earlier on...

The ship's info is what my grandfather had told my Father, uncle, and Aunt. My uncle was the first born and was named Salvatore telling me that his grandfather probably was indeed Salvatore who came here in 1929 along with my grandfather.
I believe Salvatore is now where I am going to look.

And how do you find all this so fast? Unbelievable!!

Thanks again
