William Ventola from Naples>Boston 1891

Post by sventola »

Hello,

I am looking for information about William Ventola who came from Naples in or around 1891. He married Jennie Mercliano/Marigliano sp? and had several children, one of which was my grandfather Alfredo in 1917.

I heard from family members that he immigrated with cousins/brothers and am trying to identify who they are (the cousins or brothers) and what village/locale they came from.

Also if any information on Jennie Mercliano/Marigliano/Mecogliano is around, I would be interested. She was born in 1887 or 1889 and immigrated to Boston.

Thanks

Steve

The 1910 census list a sister, Eda Ventola, age 50, single, immigration of 1910, living with,
William, age 35, immigration of 1898, is not naturalized at this time.
wife Jennie, age 25, immigration of 1898, they have been married 6 years, have had 4 children with two living,
Angelo, age 2, and Tony, an infant.......both children born in Mass.

also here is the ww1 draft registration, again he is listed as naturalized as on the 1920 census......but does not list place of birth.......

the majority of registrants in the draft named Ventola list Avellino as place of birth.......

Thanks for checking it out. That date of birth I imagine is huge when one starts to look back to Italy. But I see some conflicting dates between the censuses.
Maybe 1910 is 1912

Jenny 25 in 1910 and 33 in 1920?
William DOB 1/20/1878 and 35 in 1910..42 in 1920

I think the records for the 1910 census are off or something.
1878-1910=31/32 years old for William
1887?-1910=22/23 " " Jenny(ie)

They look like the only Italians on the block, too! That's probably why my grandfather didn't marry one.

Info provided in census is known for it's inaccuracy for a variety of reasons........I just wish image shack was not presenting a problem today so I could provide you with all images...... :?

You at least have a time frame now of when he naturalized, I would send for this documentation as it may list the town of origin. Pulling as many US records as you can will give you additional clues to follow, and don't overlook church records........if a ship manifest can be located this may also list more info.......

lots of Ventola's listed in Mass.,.........this is just for the ww1 draft registration.........

Antonia Ventola 22 Feb 1899 White Boston, Suffolk, MA
Antonio Ventola 12 Sep 1890 White Italy Boston, Suffolk, MA
Filippo Ventola 28 Feb 1884 White Boston, Suffolk, MA
Guiseppe Ventola 19 May 1891 Caucasian Italy Boston, Suffolk, MA
Nicola Ventola 4 Jan 1886 White Boston, Suffolk, MA
Nicola Ventola 2 Mar 1901 Caucasian Italy Boston, Suffolk, MA
Catello Ventola 11 Apr 1894 White Italy East Boston, Suffolk, MA
Joseph Ventola 31 Jul 1882 White Hyde Park, Suffolk, MA
William Ventola 20 Jan 1878 White Hyde Park, Suffolk, MA
Alfonso Ventola 13 May 1875 White Winthrop, Suffolk, MA
Peter Ventola 10 Mar 1896 Caucasian Italy Winthrop, Suffolk

Looking for info in between helping clean out the garage....

I have yet to locate the manifest needed, however I did find the following,

note the spelling of surname and origin........in fact the majority of Ventola's list this same town........

Name: Ida Mercogliano
Arrival Date: 23 Feb 1910
Age: 17 years
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1893
Gender: Male
Ethnic Background: Italian (South)
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Ship Name: Romanic
Port of Arrival: Boston, Massachusetts
Friend's Name: Pellegrino Ventola
Last Residence: Italy
Microfilm Roll Number: 143

Name: Vitaliano Mercogliano
Arrival Date: 7 Apr 1903
Age: 25 years
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1878
Gender: Male
Ethnic Background: Italian (South)
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Ship Name: New England
Port of Arrival: Boston, Massachusetts
Friend's Name: Nicola Ventola

*(this one list Nicola as cousin)

I believe this could be a possibility for your Jenny......

This is good stuff. I appreciate what you're doing.

Pellegrino is William I believe.

I can't read the first name on the Mercogliano listed on that last picture.
If it's Giovanna, then we've got something.

But, it lists her at 22(if I am reading it correctly) in 1904 and in another record she is 25 in 1910 and yet another 33 in 1920.

Possible dates of birth:1882,1885, and 1887. The 1920 census info is the only information I can validate from my own knowledge.
Is it common to find this many conflicting dates?

It is probably far less common to find a female Mercogliano coming from Parolise to Boston and meeting her brother Vitaliano who is a cousin of Nicola Ventola who is most likely a cousin of William (Pellegrino) Ventola.
The story goes that William came with his cousins.

Just thinking out loud for most of this.
What should my next step be?
Track down naturalization records and a marriage certificate?

Obtain any and all US documents, never know what clues they will provide.
Do not overlook church records, and obituaries are wonderful for listing names, dates and places.

Here is a link to help locate records,
http://www.archives.gov/northeast/bosto ... urces.html

The name has been transcribed as GIOVANINA.......need a magnifying glass with that particular image!!!!!!!

Good luck with your search.... :)

The license would appear in clerks office, but the church will also have some records of sacraments......
