I have also tried finding older Italian newspapers, but for the Chicago area.
There doesn't seem to be much information on the internet about where to locate Italian newspapers
I agree with member Ally that you should try the New York Public Library.
This is a link that may also help.

Good luck

Hi,
Italian newspapers did exist, but the few I found only listed certain events, like parties & meetings. I guess associated with clubs etc.
Also, I could not find any obits for New York area on whom I was looking.
Email the library and they will give you some other area of finding a death notice. (Sorry I cannot locate the email they sent me with the correct email for this service)
Note, this is much more expensive, it is a research service, I spent the money and still came up empty.
I found in New Jersey, where I live, the Jersey City Library could not find any Italians in the local newspapers. And in early 1900's there were alot of Italians living in North Bergen and Jersey City area. She suggested to look at Italian newspapers thus is how I found the few here also.
Good luck, if I locate the email for this service I will let you know by pm.

The Main Library in Paterson, NJ houses a microfilmed collection of "La Questione Sociale from 1895-1916.
This paper was probably one of the top Italian language "anarchist" papers of the time, but i don't think obits were part of its repertoire.
In fact, i've found that most 19th papers did not list many obits unless they were of prominent people.
