Califano surname

Post by PatC »

I am wondering if I can find any relatives of my Grandfather in Italy. His name in Italy was Ciro Califano. He emigrated to the United States in 1912, when he was 17 from Avellino Italy. I am also interested in learning the origen and meaning of the name Califano.

Thank you in advance for any information,
Pat

jscm,

That was fast! That definitely looks like my grandfather's manifest information. I believe "Azellino" is a misspelling of "Avellino". Thank you so much taking the time to look this up and post. I am hopeful that I will be able to find some descendents of his siblings in Italy.

Thanks again,
Pat

Hi Pat,

You're welcome.

Do you have him on census records? What 1st name did he go by in the states? Also, do you know when & where he died?

Hi Pat,

Here is a link to the Califanos' currently living in Avellino, Avellino, Ilaty.

http://www.paginebianche.it/execute.cgi ... o&ind=&nc=

If you will provide info on his wife & children & where ithey settled we maybe able to locate more records.

Also, if you are interested in tracing the families in Avellino, the LDS Church (mormans) have filmed this town's civil records (births, marriages, deaths) for 1809-1899. Here is a link to the available films.

Locate your nearest LDS-Family History Center link.

jscm and suanj,

Thank you both for your information. I'm glad to know the origin of "Califano".

Although his name in Italy was Ciro Califano and that is the name on the Ellis Island information, his name in the United States was Jerry Califana (last letter changed to an a). No one really knows how or why the change. He married in 1917 and lived in Tarrytown, New York for all of his life. He died when he was in his 80's - I don't remember exactly how old.

He had 2 sons - one of whom is my father. He never went back to Italy and I don't believe he ever contacted his relatives in Italy. I will definitely check out the page of Califano's in Avellino when I get home.

Also, he had a twin sister who died in Italy when she was 7 (about 1902) after falling on a piggy back ride.

Thanks again,
Pat

Hi jscm,

You are amazing! Yes. Jerry Califana Jr is my father. I copied over the requests from social security, added my information and will prepare to add my checks send them out right away.

I had really given up on tracing back relatives on my grandmother's side, since no one remembered the town of her parents, but maybe I will be able to find some information about that side also.
