I suppose it would be interesting to compare siblings if the 50% Sicilian by paper trail is composed of several ancestries instead of just one when DNA is tested.
It raises an interesting question - if my ancestry DNA turns out to be mixed on that side, would I rather reflect that mix or would I rather have inherited more "Sicilian" DNA?
Or, can DNA tests even detect that detail?

In any case, I doubt I'd spring for a test unless I knew they reported a category of Sicilian per se.

Re: Sicilian DNA
My Cumpare's DNA comes up as Sicilian on Ancestry. He also has Greek, Aegean and a small amount of French. He is Sicilian from both parents.darkerhorse wrote: ↑13 Jul 2023, 02:47 In any case, I doubt I'd spring for a test unless I knew they reported a category of Sicilian per se.
If there was a mix on the paternal (Sicilian) side, you could have more or less than your siblings, but none of you should match. Only on the 50% parental mix.

Re: Sicilian DNA
Ancestry's ethnic matrix isn't necessarily a settled science. Whereas in the above scenario, it indicates Sicilian specifically, on mine (and many others) it indicates "Greek and South Italian". Based on my DNA matches, those with Italian mixtures or other ethnicities use the latter term.
In his case, because the Sicilian is about 90+%, it is indicated that way. In your case, since it's 50-50 with other ethnicities, it could very well use the Greek/So Italian matrix.
You won't get it any closer than this. You can always do one test and upload to other sites to compare. That's what works for me. Even with all the info I've collected, the waters are still muddy. If an absolute is what you seek, I'm afraid you'll be disappointed no matter what choice you make...

Re: Sicilian DNA
What I'm looking for is specificity. If that's what you mean by "absolute" then, yes, I know it's not realistic.
"Greek and South Italian" wouldn't be satisfying.
I'd still like to say some examples of percent Sicilian indicated as such on DNA tests.

Re: Sicilian DNA
That's interesting that Sicilian shows on Ancestry. Mine shows as So. Italian. The location does seem bizarre though as I traced family back to the 1700s and the sets of grandparents lineage is from Catania, Bagheria, Canicatti, and San Pierro. The Italian side is from L'Aquila and San Fele.
Just to show how to the mix shows if you are looking to use ancestry.com

Re: Sicilian DNA
I recently did Ancestry DNA and they broke down Italian side like this...
Southern Italy
Your community with a connection to this ethnicity region
Northern Sicily 43%
West Sicily Region
Trapani Province
East Trapani Province
Palermo & Northern Sicilian Islands
Palermo
Idk if this will be much help.

That counts but I'm really looking for a percentage reported.
