Birth certificate for my great grandfather from Naples
Birth certificate for my great grandfather from Naples
I know that my great grandfather was from Naples. I do not know what part of Naples. Can I, and if so where, request his birth certificate? Thanks!
Re: Birth certificate for my great grandfather from Naples
Was he born in the city of Naples?

Re: Birth certificate for my great grandfather from Naples
Thanks for your responses.
His name is Eugenio Nostrame. He was born in Italy in 1868, either in Naples or Sicily. I do not know in what commune he was born or where he was married. He probably came to the US the same year as his wife (1906 - see below). He lived on Mulberry Street in New York City.
His wife, Rosa Maria Mangiacapre (b. 1876), came over in 1906 with her 3 children (their names spelled or misspelled "NostrOme"). I have the Ellis Island passenger manifest. We have her brother Andrew Mangiacapre's birth certificate which lists "Succovio" as his birth place. The closest place I found is Succivo in Campania, which I'm thinking is where they were both from (not sure why the spelling discrepancy). Rosa & Andrew's parents are Francesco and Clementina Mangiacapre from Cape di Monte, Italy. (not sure where this is in Italy either, I think I pulled up several places with different spellings).
Rosa Mangiacapre & Eugenio Nostrame had several children: Vincenza (b. 1901 Italy), Concetta (1905 Italy), Clementina (1906 Italy), Francesco (1907 NYC, NY), Camilla (1914 NY), Salvatore (1916 NY), Andrew (1918 NY).
Thanks again for your interest!

Is this the manifest you are referring to?

Re: Birth certificate for my great grandfather from Naples
Hi JCSM,
Yes, that's it. I have that and I also have the 1910 & 1920 US Census records for the Nostrame family. That's all.
But I still don't have anything that shows what part of Italy Eugenio is from.
Thanks.

Re: Birth certificate for my great grandfather from Naples
Moved to NJ?
Suggest obtaining:
1. birth records for all his children born in the States
2. death certificate & obituary
3. church (sacramental) records
These are sources for his birth town information. His death certificate may also supply parents' names.
Hope this helps.

Re: Birth certificate for my great grandfather from Naples
Hi Jen,
Don't know if it will help, but here is the web address for the Comune of Succivo, which is in Caserta province, near Naples: www.comune.succivo.ce.it. You need to be able to read Italian to get through it, but we on the forum can help!
I also went to the Pagine Bianche (Italian White Pages), and didn't find anyone with the surnames Nostrame nor Mangiacapre presently living in Succivo. I didn't find any Mangiacapre in Capodimonte, which is I think the town you meant.
Doesn't mean there wouldn't be anyone with those surnames in the towns nearby. You might want to try Pagine Bianche for Caserta, the largest town in the province, for those surnames. www.paginebianche.it
Cognome = last name
Nome = first name (you can leave this blank)
Dove = where? What town?
Hope this helps!

Re: Birth certificate for my great grandfather from Naples
Jen,
Just checked Pagine Bianche...there are 51 Mangiacapri in the Italian White Pages, nationwide. Several are in Caserta-province towns, namely Cesa, Arzano & Marcianise - do you know of any family connections to any of these towns? None are in the town of Caserta itself, a few more are in the city of Naples proper.
There are no Nostrame in the Pagine Bianche, anywhere in Italy. That only means there are none listed in the White Pages, not necessarily that no one in Italy has that surname.

Re: Birth certificate for my great grandfather from Naples
Thanks to all for the info.
JCSM: Yes, but how did you know they moved to NJ? And what info do you think I can get from the church records?
Raymo: I couldn't connect to that page, which would be really helpful. Do you know where Capodimonte is?
Thanks guys!

Re: Birth certificate for my great grandfather from Naples
Update:
Raymo: Thanks for clarifying the town name. I found 2 places in Italy named Capodimonte. One is in Viterbo, Lazio, and the other is in Brescia, Lombardia. Neither one is close to Naples, or Succivo.
Anybody have any advice? Thanks.

Re: Birth certificate for my great grandfather from Naples
The only census matches on ancestry are NJ.jenalonso wrote:Thanks to all for the info.

As stated, the suggested records may provide town of birth information for Eugenia & Rosa Maria. Death certificates may also provide parents' names.
May want to try obtaining the birth acts for the children born Italy from Caserta province archive. They should also have town of birth information.

Re: Birth certificate for my great grandfather from Naples
Jen,
The website above for Succivo doesn't seem to work from the link, but that is the correct address. If you go to your web browser instead of using the link, it should work. It did when I tried it.
Let us know if you need any help with specific information on the site itself.
