Traveling to Italy to locate family, where do I begin?

Post by ckdaajd »

My husband and I are traveling to Italy in October. We are going to Acerra to visit and research his fathers family. Also would like to visit his mothers (Pirolli/Cocozza) family. We believe it to be Comune di Pozzilli and Conca Casale area. Where do we begin..do we get birth records first? Any direction on this is appreciated.

Hi Cindy,

You really need to do your US research first in order to obtain the exact town in Italy information. You nned exact town information to connect with Italian relatives & for obtaining the families records.

If you will provide the family information, being as specific as you can, perhaps we can help to discover this important information.

Also, please porvide lsit of documentation you have on your husband's family.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks for your help. This is what we have..father Mauro A Di Fiore was born in Acerra in 1897, Immigrated to US in 1921. We have 1st cousin living there and will be in contact. We want to look for fathers sister's Guilia Di Fiore family and verify the names of mother and father Antiono Di Fiore and Clementine Di Bouno.
Mothers family: We have Alien Registration book that lists his maternal grandmother's Angela Maria Pirolli date and place of birth. Although is lists Congasalle, Compobasso Italy, 5/15/1875. I think is should be Conca Casle because his aunt was born in Comune di Pozzilli, and that is directly from the birth certicate of her. I also have marriage date of maternal grandfather (Nicondro Andrew Cocozza) and grandmother (Angelina) but no idea where they lived. Angela immigrated to US in 1909 with two children.Nicondro was here a few years prior to establish and find work before sending for his wife. My motherinlaw was born in US that same year 1909.
Thanks again for any help on this.

"Also, please porvide list of documentation you have on your husband's family."

Requested this so we wouldn't duplicate research already done.

Do you have the other online inforrmation? Ceneus records? Military(if any)? etc.

Birth towns listed on manifests are accurate.

Thanks sooo much, VJ & jcsm400 That manifest is worth checking out in more detail. It looks to be Nicondro and there were relatives in Rhode Island on Pirolli side. He was born in 1876. Only documents I have are two manifests from Mauro and Angelina and a note from Rosa's daughter verifying what her birth certificate said. There is a LDS center close and I will certainly check it out. I certainly have lots to do before our October trip. It will be a first for both but I feel this will be a very emotional trip for him as he was very close to his family and he's the only one left.
Once again THANK YOU!
