SCIBELLI family from Avellino

Post by jscibelli »

I have quite a bit of information on one of the Scibelli lines that originated in Moschiano, Avellino (there are 2). I would love more information and can give more specifics if you can help with my search! My family immigrated and settled in Jamaica, Queens in the early 1900's.
ANY HELP would be great!
Thanks!

If you post your info here along with what you already know (you do need to be a bit more specific though) and we'll see what we can do.

I am leaving out some info due to its length. The specific line I am concerned with is in capital letters. Thank you for reading this!

Line 1: ANGELO SCIBELLI (b. circa 1852) m. ANNA RUSSO.
Brothers to Angelo are Daniel and Francesco Scibelli.

Line 2: Angelo Scibelli had 3 sons and 2 daughters
Salvatore b 1873, died in Italy
Antonio b. 1875 m. Maria Grazia DeStefano
Angela Rose Scibelli
Maria Scibelli m ?? had a daughter Emilia Caracciolo (lived in Avellino)
ROBERTO CARMINE SCIBELLI b 1882 d. 1952 in USA m. VINCENZA (Jennie) DESTEFANO b. 1891 d. 1962. Vincenza's parents are Francesco DeStefano b. 1843 d. 1925 and Angela Rose Pasquale

Line 3: ROBERTO CARMINE SCIBELLI and VINCENZA had 3 sons
Francesco (Frank) Scibelli b 1908 in Queens, NY m. Maria DeLaurentis
Benjamin Scibelli b 1917 m. Jean Longo
ANGELO (Charles) SCIBELLI b. 1910 d. 1982 m. PHILOMENA YENOLI b. Feb. 10, 1918

Line 4: ANGELO SCIBELLI and PHILOMENA (Fanny) had 3 sons
James Scibelli
Robert Scibelli
CHARLES FRANK SCIBELLI b. March 6, 1941

CHARLES FRANK SCIBELLI is my father.

I am specifically trying to find more info about Angelo Scibelli and Anna Russo- from either Moschiano or Monte Fort. In addition, I would like to find more info on my grandmother's side (Philomena maiden Yenoli). She says that her name was changed from Iervolina (Avellino). Her Parents are LOUIS IERVOLINO? and AGNES LAURENZA.

Were they from Moschiano also?
A couple of interesting possibilities?

I saw the info on Scibelli-Volino from Avellino...thanks! I know that the Iervolino-Laurenza line is from Avellino...that's as far as I can go. My grandmother is the last remaining of that line and she is 89--hard for her to remember.
Thanks for your help!

Possible WWI Draft Registration Card for Louis Iervolino

Name--Louis Irvolo, foreman LIRR
Address--182 Roseville? Ave, Jamaica, Queens, NY
matches 1920 census
DOB--18 October 1873

edited to add comment below relative to 1920 and 1910 census addresses

Per Steve Morse's site, Rossville and Roseville Avenues in Queens, Jamaica were renamed to 150th St. Dubroff Avenue possibly to 154th St. Taking a look at a current map, both 150th and 154th Street are close to the LIRR's Jamaica station.

Yes! My great-aunt Caroline was named after her sister who died very young. How do you suppose the census names were so different?

Jen, names on the census could have been "sounded out"
if the person taking the info was unfamiliar with the language
or accent.
It's not at all unusual

Sounds like him but...My grandmother says they settled in Jamaica, Queens from Ellis Island. Maybe he just took the wrong horse...:)

Jen, there were Iervolino's in Buffalo on the 1900 census.
If he was related, he may have given that info. Not sure
what the restrictions were in 1894 for having a 'sponsor'
in the US.

Have you poked around the NY databases at the
Italian Genealogical Group

Great place to find & order vital records.
