Achille Iacini ??

Post by ambrijes »

Hello! Does anyone know anything about the Italian origin of this person? Probably Southern Italy and born around 1875-1881. Believe he came to U.S. around 1913 and married a Martina Gutierrez (Mexico??). Any help would be soooo much appreciated! :D Nanette

Welcome to the forum!!

Have you located any US records? Did they have children? Do you know their names and birthdates? In which state did they live?
Naturalization and manifest records could help pinpoint exact location in Italy.

If this is the correct family, could Achille have immig in 1886/89 from Italy
and 1902 from Mexico?
Have you located his naturalization paperwork? May have the town in Italy...

Oh my gosh! Thank you everyone! These all seem to be accurate and I did not know of Charles Iacini...I have so much homework to do. Its amazing how many differences in spelling there are. Yes, some of the five children use Jacini and some Iacini as their surnames...wondering what happened there???? I am so excited to get started with this! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! :-) Nanette

The j's replaced by i's is common. My grandmother's name was Majoulo but in the US it became Maioulo - Ajello became Aiello. Anyone know why? Someone once told me there was no j in Italian. Is this true?

Cathy,
There is no "j" in Tuscan Italian. However, "j" was used in Calabria and Sicily. I believe because of the Spanish influence.

Thanks Biff - you know everything! :D So in Calabria how do they pronounce a j - is it like an i? Or did the names just get misspelled because of the visual similarities?

Thanks Cathy & Biff! I always wondered why three of the five sons used Jacini and the other two Iacini. There are now multiple cousins from all five brothers using both names....confusing but now it makes more sense. Thanks again...Nanette :-)
