Re: Quick word help please?
a bracciante is a farm laborer and contadino is a farmer or farm laborer.
Re: Quick word help please?
thank you so much...I suspected there was a difference, but was always told it was an interchangeable word.

Hi clicker,
here is the link for the word list provided by LDS church. It lists the words found on birth acts, marriage banns, deaths etc. I've found it very useful.

Hope the link works and I hope it helps.

In a book I read, called La Storia, 5 Generations of Italians in America, it said that a contadino was a step up from a laborer or a peasant. They usually owned a small tract of land and maybe a mule.

Hi Poipuo and Clicker
There's also another word, very close to bracciante (farm laborer) and it's bracciale which is a laborer.
I wasn't aware that contadina meant that property was owned. Very interesting.

Hey, Billie,
My impression from that book I read, La Storia, is that ownership for a contadina involved a small amount of property, like a plot or a field, as opposed to a noble landowner, who would own acres upon acres.

Re: Quick word help please?
the "bracciante" is a farmhand; the "contadino" is a farmer working of own little farm property...

Hi All
Thanks so much for your thoughful answers, certainly sheds some light....here's a new one though. Along the same vein, I believe this profession is generally also a farmer but can't quite make out the second word, I know the first word means farmer but....Also, can anyone read the cause of death (last line)....I have shown so many people but the handwriting is atrocious. Please see my attachment, the file is my great great grandfather's brother.

Re: Quick word help please?
Are you trying to use the upload provided on this site? If so it doesn't work. You will need to use imageshack or flicker. You can get free accounts at both sites.
I use imageshack, here's the link
http://www.imageshack.us/
After you sign up for a free account - select browse and select your image, then select host it. It will then upload your image and give you several different selections to choose from for the format you want to use. It will look like your options are all right next to the image, but scroll all the way to the bottom and there will be a selection that says direct link to image. Highlight the direct link image, go to the menu on your main screen window and select edit, then copy. Come back to the forum and start your post for this thread, then paste the link.
I hope my instructions aren't to confusing.

Re: Quick word help please?
The literal translation for colono is colonist or farmer and the second word looks like mezzadio? I'm not sure, I can't see it clear enough.
The bottom line says natural causes.

Re: Quick word help please?
The second word is mezzadro (I mistook the dro as dio). Mezzadro is a tenant farmer or share cropper.
Hopefully some who speaks better Italian than I, will take a look and confirm if I'm right or not.
My translation was literal.
