Lucia DiStefano married Giuseppi(Joseph)Sapienza

Post by TIGER965 »

I found out that my Great,Great Grandfather Joseph married a woman(1st)and had 3 children, and then she passed away. I do not know their names. Then he married Lucia DiStefano. They had 14 children and I only know 9 of their names. I was told that these 8 except Dominic(k) came to America and all the rest stayed in Sicily-Italy. They are Vito, Mary,Rose,Alfred,Frank(my Great Grandfather), Eugene, Anna, Dominic(k)and Salvatore.

I have looked up Rose(Rosa)Sapienza and found out for sure she came over with her mother Lucia and brother Salvatore on June 4,1909 on the S.S. America from Napoli. (# 14,#15,#16) They lived in BelPasso,Catania. As far as I know Rose(Rosa)stayed with her brother Frank and his wife for a while in Brooklyn,N.Y. and then eventually moved to New Castle,Pa to marry her husband Frank Bonuito. I do not know what happened to Lucia and Salvatore once they got here. Possibly they stayed in Brooklyn,N.Y.
I have found Lucia and Giuseppi's Marriage Document and now looking for Giuseppe's 1st Marriage Document.
Any information about my Great Great Grandparents is greatly appreciated. :D

Hi Tiger...glad to see you took my suggestion and posted in the open forum.....You will recieve much more help here than I could provide!!

I recently took on a 12 room historical house, so have been quite busy with restoration work, not much time for research....although I do try to check in daily.

I will try to follow this thread, but I'm sure our great members can get you pointed in the right direction!!

Good Luck with your search!! :D

I would like to find Lucia and Giuseppi's Marriage Certificate
if any proof is still around

Tiger,
It appears the Family History Center near you (click home page for location)
can order you microfilms for the town of Belpasso
They’ll be in Italian and possibly Latin. Many of us here have been able to
work thru them for our families with a little practice!
You should be able to locate Giuseppe & Lucia’s marriage record & more!

Hi vj

I'm posting both pages of the 1912 manifest. Line 15 is Pasquale Serifica married to Rosa Sapienza still in Italy going to Bro-in-law Vito. Line 18 is Alfro? Sapienza wondering if that is Alfredo or Alfred father Giuseppe still in Italy going to Vito and line 19 is Salvatore Matta or Motta wife Domenica Sapienza still in Italy going to bro-in-law Vito. So I think now we have some ages as of 1912 and spouses full names and Vito had a permanent residence here. Also Giuseppe was back in Italy in 1912.

Hey Elizabeth!
Great catch on the 1912 manifest!
Lot's of great connections.
Noticed a few possible naturalization notations
on some of them.
I checked the IGG database for Lucia w/o any luck.

This is a 1904 manifest for Salvatore Motta and his wife Domenica Sapieza going to cousin Luciano Grasso along with quite a few other people. Lines 19 thru 25. So Domenica was in the US at least this once but per the previous manifest she is back in Italy before 1912.

Tiger do you have any of the birth acts for Giuseppe's children? I'm asking because I have a suspicion that some of the children you listed are from a first marriage that Lucia may have had.

Ciao a tutti....
Should I give my help??
This is what I found from the arrival manifests:

Sept. 29, 1904 : Motta Salvatore, wife Sapienza Domenica and Daughter Anna Motta first arrival in USA. They were going to the cousin Luciano grasso living in Mulberry Street NY

March 30, 1907: Sapienza Alfio first arrival. He was going to his brother in law Salvatore Motta Park Street NY... Spelling is SAPIMRA Alfio

June 4, 1909: Sapienza Salvatore, Rosa and the mother Lucia Di Stefano going to the Brother/son Alfio (maybe Maurice Street?? NY)

March 30, 1910: Sapienza Vito arrival, going to the brother Alfio and sisters Maria and Rosa (dont' know the address but it seems Sicilia bank??) he was leaving in Belpasso (Italy) his wife Rosaria D'Urso. Spelling is SAPIENJA...

October 26, 1912: Sapienza Alfio and Motta Salvatore second arrival going to the brother/in law Vito living in NY (Collis street??). Leaving in Italy - Belpasso the father Sapienza Giuseppe for Alfio and the wife Sapienza Domenica for Salvatore
(so she returned in Italy?)

October 25, 1913: Sapienza Francesco arrival, going to the brother Vito 80-86 Spring Street NY, leaving in Italy the father Sapienza Giuseppe

From Ancestry these Draft Cards:

WWII for Sapienza Alfio (DOB May 10, 1884) Nearest Relative: Frank Sapienza living in Brooklyn 2nd street

WWI for Sapienza Frank (DOB April 4, 1893)

WWII for Sapienza Frank (nearest relative: wife Grace) dob April 4, 1893 in Belpasso, living in 78 Second Place Brooklyn...

If you need the imagines please tell me...

Laura :)

Salvatore Sapienza, Lucia DiStefano and Rosa Sapienza lines 14, 15 and 16 going to Lucia's son Alfio. Scoastiano Motta line 17 is going to his brother Salvatore Motta husband of Domenica Sapienza (daughter of Lucia and Giuseppe) the same address as Alfio, son of Giuseppe and Lucia.
