Search for Grandparent info
I'm new to this site and am interested in learning more about my paternal grandparents. I have my father's birth certificate. His name was Alfredo Striano born September 13 1917 on Mulberry Street in NYC. His parents (my grandparents) were Pietro Striano b. in Italy (not sure where) he was 33 years old in 1917 (according to my Dad's birth certificate) so he was born in Italy approximately 1884. My grandmother's maden name is listed as Rosolia Cretella, she was als born in Italy (I've been told Salerno but not sure) and is listed as 32 on my Dad's birth certfcate putting her birth year in Italy at approximtely 1885. I would like to know when they arrived in the USA, where their home towns in Itay were, inorder that might further inquire as to existing records in Italy (especially their birth certifcates , marriage certificates) I'm also curious as to whether or not they were naturalized US citizens and if so where I might locate those documents to work backwards and learn more about their origins. I have learned there is a village outside of Naples called Striano and not sure if that is my grandfathers birthplace. Any help you could give me to direct me further would be appreciated.
I plan to visit NYC and the Ellis Island museum next month and would love to have more information to conduct a search at ELlis.
Thanks appreciate any advice or guidance on how t proceed,

Hi MJ!
Age is about right and interestingly the town is Cicciano, same one as on the Did Not Sail manifest I posted earlier. Looks like we need some input from Bojo.

Hi guys!
You're right quite a few (1906 & 1907) for
Cicciano (Naples, Campania)
Can't figure out why this Rosalia is going to CT?

Re: Search for Grandparent info
Boy, what terrific information you've come across. I am so grateful.
My Grandfather Pietro was a tailor I remember him with his measuring tape around his neck and white chalk to measue our trouser pants lengths for Easter suits ajustments. He told a story that he once made a coat for Eleanor Rosevelt as part of her husband's CCC initatives.
I am not sure that my Grandmother went to Conn. when she arrived in this country, she may have initally. By who knows what went on. (I'll have to ask some counsins about that to see what they know) but do know my Gardparents didn't come to this country together. He came first, then sent for her when he made some money for her passage.
Also if I read what you've discovered correctly. my Granfather did apply for Naturalization in 1916 but looks as if my grandmother did not.
So the information you all found such as the Registration Cards and ship manifests are all public information? I knew a little about the ship manifests and will follow up when I go to Ellis Island next month. Not sure abot the "did not" sail listings (though it jives with birth dates. Great to know my grandfather was born of March 19 1884 that's more than I knew. As a boy we visited my Grndparents in the only home I knew for them, a house they rented in Ozone Park Queen, so the 1930 census data is correct. Also my father's older brother's name was Vincenzo (we called him Uncle Jimmy)
Also if Ciccano is the village where my grandfather was born, I guess if I write to officals in that town perhaps I can get his birth certificate and then try to find more about my grandmother and perhaps their marrage cetificates
You've all be great and I thank you for getting me started in a good direction. You've already given m aot to wok with.

You are very welcome Bojo,
Some of what vj and Biff found is on
http://www.ancestry.com/Default.aspx
which is a paid site. However most libraries have a version that you can access free. Most libraries also have HeritageQuest which you can access at the library or online at home using your card number.
Here are also 2 sites to access Ellis Island info. The Steve Morris site is great becauseyou can search under any category.
http://www.ellisisland.org/default.asp? ... gAod0xWQGA
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/ellisgold.html
We know that Pietro did not sail because a line was drawn through his name on certain manifests.
We are still searching for Pietro's initial entry into the US. The name may be mangled, he may have come through Castle Garden or perhaps to Philly or Boston.
Good luck on your research. We are here if you need more help, advice or direction.
