Help finding DiPino family in Amalfi

Post by fdepino »

Hi everyone my name is Frank DePino. After doing research on Ancestry.com I was able to determine that my great grandfather, Francesco Dipino, arrived in the United States around 1904. Before leaving for the U.S. it appears that he was born and lived in Amalfi, Italy. A World War II registration card says he was born on May 19th, 1880 in Amalifi and that was married to Emilia Gambardella. For some reason, prior to 1910, he changed the spelling of his last name from DiPino to DePino.

At any rate I am trying to find out more about his family. Did he have any siblings? Who were his parents, etc? But I’ve hit a dead end it appears in Amalfi, Italy. Does anyone have any recommendations of where to search next? Or any other information?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Ciao,
Frank

Dear FDepino since there are no microfilmed records for Amalfi civil records and since it appears that your grandfather entered the USA whenhe was about 24 years of age it appears he may have served in the Italian Military which will have his conscription records (registro di Leva) which has his complete vital records relating to his immediate family in Amalfi.

Go to www.mangeruca.com and send a form letter in Italian for his military records from the Military archives in Salerno which is the Amalfi provincial capital. The address may appear inthe website as well. =Peter=

Frank,
Have you checked other arrivals for DiPino’s (Di Pino, Dipino, etc) or Gambardella's?
Sometimes you can find folks joining your family in CT
Valarie

Just one example from Ellis Island
(besides NY, there also may be more in the Boston lists on ancestry)

I believe you are talking about my uncle. He had one sister who's name was Rosa. Francesco's father was Pasqual and his mother's name was Chiarina Alfiero. Pasqual was killed in Amalfi.
You can contact me and I can tell you more of what I know.
