baptised in Livorno

I'm new here and I hope this is the right place to post.
I have some questions about a relative that was baptised in the British Chaplaincy in Livorno in 1834.
His name was Thomas Matthew Keogh

His parents were Thomas Keogh and Eliza (nee Gillan). Thomas was a land agent and Eliza was born in Bandon, Cork, Ireland in 1803.

I wondered if there was any info available about what they were doing in Livorno, where they came from and how long they were there.

I know they were back in England in 1836 as their daughter Harriet was christened in London.

I do hope that someone is able to help me as their early life is a mystery to me. I have full info from 1851 but very little before.

There is an english website www.findmypast.com which is a paying website but you can do name checks free which will assist you. There does not appear to be any Mormon FHL records for the Birtish Chaplaincy in Livorno. Also try www.familysearch.org under ancestor search for Keogh and Gillan. Please get back after you have checked into these sources.=Peter=

I did a cursory check and found a book about Birtish presence inLivorno from 1814-1868 that mya prove helpful. Go to www.escholarship.org/editons Fill in the editions rectangle with the word LIVORNO and the book will come up along with severalothers about Livorno as well. =Peter=

Thanks for such a prompt reply.
I have my info from LDS website about Thomas' christening in Livorno. Can't find any relevant references to his parents though.

'Find my past' only has registrations from 1837 so Thomas and his parents were too early.

With regard to the other site you recommended, I will browse that at length in the near future.

Ordering Microfilm

1. Now the FHC does not have all the microfilm in their possession.

2. You have to order the microfilm which takes 3-4 weeks for it to arrive.

3. It costs about $5.75 a roll for 30 days of viewing time.

4. If you need to renew the microfilm, it cost about $5.50 for another 60 days.

5. If you need to renew it after the 60 days, it will cost another $5.50 and the films can be kept on an indefinite bases.

6. Microfilm must be viewed at the FHC.

7. Copies are $0.35 a page.

Thanks, that's great. There is a centre in Liverpool, which is not too far away, near where I used to live.

Check with the center to see if they have any of the records you need on permanant loan. You might just get lucky!!! In any case, happy hunting. If you need any other help, let us know.

from what I can understand your Thomas was born in Livorno, you can always request the integral copy of his birth record to

Ufficio di Stato Civile
Piazza del Municipio 50
CAP 57100 Livorno - Italy

or write to Archivio di Stato di Firenze to have it

as-fi@beniculturali.it

This record of birth tells you also the name, age and occupation of both parents, and where birth occured (address of home of couple)
