Artist Giovanni Sachetti

Hi to all,

My friend has asked me to post to this list as she doesn't have access to a computer at the moment.


Her dad was born in the US and is 96 years old. His name is Dante Sackett. His father was born in Italy, possibly Venice or Lugoroni and he was a well known mural artist in the US back in the day. I think he did some major monuments in DC or possibly NYC. His name was

Giovanni Sacchetti di Piance or
Giovanni Sacchetti di Pianci or
Giovanni Sacchetti di Pians or
sometimes he signed his name as
Giovanni Sacchetti or
Giovianni Sacchetti.

That's all I know at the moment. If anyone can help me get more info to help her get more info that would be great. I don't even know where in the US Dante lived, I think it would be NY or NJ or PA area as he still has the accent even though he has been living in FL for many years.

I came across a Giovanni Saccheti arriving at NYC on May 12, 1897 sailing from Genova at age 20. (that would make his birth year 1877). His profession is listed as sculptor. The record of his arrivsal is in the www.castlegarden.com website which does not furnish his place of origin in Italy nor where he was destined to live in the USA. if you insert the last name Sacchet in the Veneto Region you'll find that the first towns where the Lastname is mostly present are :

Sorry for the delay in posting back about this. Dante, who is 90 and his daughter, Carolina, were both overwhelmed with the wealth of info that this list was able to supply to them. They were still piecing the information together when I last saw them on the 9th. I won't see them again until after the new year. By then, perhaps they will have new questions, or maybe some more details as they share the info you gave me with some of their other relatives.

Just wanted to sign on and give another HUGE thank you to this great group! My friend Carolina had asked me info about her father's family last year. I posted to this forum and the information each of you supplied was just amazing. My friend called me yesterday in tears. She left this morning for Italy to visit with the relatives she has recently come to know. She had planned to take the information that you had suppled to me with her to Italy to show to the new found relatives.

Somehow in all the chaos that goes into an overseas paking trip, the information packet was lost. She spent 6 days searching in desparation for it before she called me. I didn't think I would find the information again, but I did a search on this forum and saw that all the information was still there. Amazing. You folks are so helpful in ways you may never know.
