Mazzei-Scalise next gen. Mascaro-Scalise from Angoli, Italy

Post by Mascaro-Scalise »

Hi,
I am trying to track down my great grandfather's family. His name was Frank Scalise and his son, Joseph was born in Angoli. Frank's parents were Giuseppe Scalise and Maria Mazzei, presumably from the same region of Calabria. Frank came to America through Canada in around 1880. Rose (Mascaro) Scalise joined him in Warren, PA with their son (Joseph above) around 1886. My grandmother was born after that.

Any insight anyone could give me about which office in Italy to contact for their vital records on that end would be most appreciated. I have his naturalization certificate from Warren, thin on data as it is, it shows that he applied for citizenship in 1888, but wasn't naturalized until 1891. Would Italy have a corresponding document somewhere?

Thanks so much,
Theresa

Hi Theresa
Welcome to the Forum!
I enjoyed the pictures on your blog.
Since Italian records are kept in the original comune,
perhaps you may want to start by writing to Angoli?

Let me give some more details:

Frank Scalise born Francesco? 1/13/1850 and married in 1874 in Italy, died 7/5/1930 in Warren, PA
Rose Mascaro Scalise born 4/12/1853 in Italy, died 1/19/1940 in Warren, PA

Their son, Joseph was born in Angoli on 9/4/1873. He died in Warren also, but had changed his last name to Gleese. His death was on 5/27/1952.

Does Angoli hold the civil records or are they governed by a larger comuni? Need someone to double check this.

Hi wldspirit :D !
According to the microfilm notes for Angoli, it is a frazione of Serrastretta
Perhaps a letter to Serrastretta may also be prudent?

Checking the films just for Serrastretta:

Title Registri dello stato civile, 1809-1860
Authors #Serrastretta (Catanzaro). Ufficio dello stato civile (Main Author)

These films only list Serrastretta, Andali, Accariao, and San Michele

You’re right, perhaps the Serrastretta films may contain records for Angoli prior to 1840

What do you think?

I hadn't looked at the microfilms, only the address:

Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Comune di Angoli
88040 ANGOLI CZ
ITALY

I know my town of origin does not hold the civil records, the larger town next to it does......found this out after months of no replies to my request....
That's why I thought we should have one of our posters living in Italy double check, as I cannot find an exact address for Angoli in the official website for offices.

Oh my wldsprit!
That must have been very frustrating!
Here’s an old post with some information

and a neat link by Jim Bianco

Then it is entirely possible that the address should be:

Comune di Serrastretta
Ufficio di Stato Civile
Via Municipio
88040 Serrastretta (CZ)
Italy

telephone: 0968-81143
fax: 0968-81143
email: comuneserrastretta@libero.it

Which is why I asked for clarification so that we provide the correct address.

Thanks to both of you for checking on the proper mailing address. Do you think I could email the Serrastretta office to clarify? Would they respond? :)

Hi Everyone!

Cathy has worked very hard on the Catanzaro Exchange and the Serrastretta records (with Jims help) and She has helped Jim with his records on the Carini Exchange. She is an amazing person and puts so much love and pride in her work that I wanna be just like her when I grow up. Love you Cathy!

I think you may be right about where to write the letter. Serrastretta holds the records for many smaller comuni but I can't remember the details of when Jim wrote them. I will see if I can dig up the request somewhere and get back to you.

Thanks Nuccia...... :D I didn't want our poster writing to the wrong comune, waiting for months on records to arrive and then finding out that the records are held somewhere else......kinda like me with Talamello....

You all have done a fantastic job for the Calabria region!!
The amount of time and energy shows real dedication!!
