Ancestry from Alia, (Name Michel, Micheli, Miceli)

Post by Nytewind »

Looking for information about

Joseph Michel (Giuseppe) {Possibly Micheli, Miceli)
Josephine "Campiere" Michel (Giuseppa Campiere)
Benjamin Micheli (or the proper form)
from the Alia region arriving in New Orleans late 1800's early 1900's

I am including attachment of my family tree for dates

I know that Virginia is related to Angelina Campiere Archote from Chalmette LA.

Thank you for your assistance.

To clarify,

I'm looking for the proper name to attempt to trace back into Italy. I am unable to find them on passenger lists online.

Thank you again.

I'm not saying this is correct but Miceli is pronounced Micheli in Calabrese/Italian if that helps.

There are a number of Miceli coming into New Orleans, however only one would fit the birthdate of your Giuseppe:

New Orleans Passenger Lists, 1820-1945
Name: Giuseppe Miceli
Arrival Date: 28 Oct 1889
Age: 21
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Palermo, Italy
Ship Name: Letimbro
Port of Arrival: New Orleans, Louisiana
National Archives' Series Number: M259_73

Also traveling on this same manifest is a Maria Taulli age 53.

Micelli, Miceli, micela and a host of other variants, alterations, derivations and abbreviations are all based upon the base surname MICHELI with Miceli found in the south of Italy while Michi is found in Veneto. The surnames are listed inthe Italian surname dictionary and all are based upon biblical hebrew, greek and latinversions of the name Michael. =Peter=

Virginia Ann's parents were Giuseppe Miceli and Giuseppa Campiere and they married on January 24, 1895 (see http://www.lordsofdoom.com/michelmarriage4.jpg ) in New Orleans, Church of St. Philip.

The surname to track back in Italy is Miceli.

The link is http://www.lordsofdoom.com/michelmarriage4.jpg, and I got it from this post http://italiangenealogy.tardio.com/Foru ... html#87780.

That date makes sense with birthdates of the children.

I'm confused though as Josephs Declaration of Intent has them married in Alia Jan 3rd 1875. He was older then and maybe his memory had faded..or maybe for some reason they had to remarry?

If he was born about 1869 (census and passenger list) it is unlikely that he married in 1875 - he would have been six years old! It was probably "95" rather than "75"

By the way, the LDS has 59 microfilms of filmed ALI records at this link

But the best is a 10 year index that covers the years you need - these indexes are rare but WONDERFUL when you find them!!

In the Alia records the name is spelled MICELI. In Louisiana records I have seen it spelled various ways, MICELA, MICELE, MICHAEL, MICHELE, and MICHEL.
