birth certificate does not list gender of child

I am curious to know if this is commonly done. I received an "Estratto dal Registro degli Atti di Nascita" for my GGM and there is no place on the form which indicates the gender of the child. The gender is obvious in the baby's name, but it's the first birth certificate I've seen that does not specifically state the gender.

In English there are names such as Laurie, Carol, Terry, which could be given to either a boy or a girl. It would be necessary to indicate the gender in those instances.

The answer can be found in the wording that precedes the name/s given. Many Acts look similar to the one I've attached below - I have also attached my translation of the same Act. Both have the personal details removed but they will show you haw to see if it is a boy or girl.

Where it says 'bambin...' the clerk would enter an 'o' (bambino) for a boy or an 'a' (bambina) for a girl.

It has the masculine "nato" already typed into the form. They didn't allow the final letter to be written in. Were they only expecting boys? (I'm joking!)

The key to finding out the sex of the child is in the name. Unlike English, there are no names that are used for both sexes (or at least I never came across any).

I see the act you posted is from 1932, and this shows how similar the wording is for them. The one I used was from 1810 from Calabria...
I am gradually translating the styles/variations of a selection of acts that a friend has been transcribing for a very long time (hers is a a real labour of love).

These acts often vary from town to town and from year to year, but at the end of the day they all contain the same information. So if you can understand one, then it's just a question of deciphering the awful handwriting that was often used.

Mind you - some of this was truly wonderful... Often the only problem for us is learning the difference in the style of calligraphy - and, of course - remembering that thier alphabet is missing a few letters (j,k,w,y)!!!
