A long list of unknown italian localities, help needed
A long list of unknown italian localities, help needed
During research for an exhibition about italian immigrants to the Ruhr-Area (Germany) in the late 1800s and early 1900s, we encounterd a list of unknown localities in probably northern Italy.
Any help to identify the correct names would be much appreciated.
We currently use the locality database of this very site and the following link:
http://www.enit.it/comuni.asp?Lang=IT

Hi,
My suspicion is that
- TBottegal
My suspicion is that
- Forzaso - Bellino
- FONZASO (Belluno)
- TBottegal
Re: A long list of unknown italian localities, help needed
Tank You, TBottegal
Fonzaso (BL) could be right - the surname of the miners (Angelo Pellin,*21.04.1887, Antonio Pellin, *24.10.1887 ) is frequent in this town but missing in Bellino(CN),Piemonte.

Your best bet is to go to the home page of this forum and select from the column on the left locations in Italy and there you can narrow your search with sounds like inputs which will then offer alternatives to real towns. Peter

Thanks Peter for this hint, but this is already done ('part of names' - 'sounds like' etc.)... it was really helpfull in some cases. We started with about 70 locations.
The list shows only localities we could not find out by using this 'Locations in Italy' database and the Enit Site.

Re: A long list of unknown italian localities, help needed
Sorry about re-inventing the wheel but your lack of detail threw me. It is a tough nut to crack because it will require hours of research and cross referencing. I suppose you already have used the italian surname dictionary to narrow down the area of dominance of one surname as opposed to another (north -south, Lombardia versus Veneto etc). Peter
Re: A long list of unknown italian localities, help needed
You are right Peter, it is hard work, because not only the names of towns are often misspelled even the family names are sometimes curios written (e.g. Hubart Bohso for Umberto Bosco). We have about 1.400 records for coal miners (1872 to 1920) and most of them we could locate somewhere in Northern Italy.
So I will use the family name database (is it www.pubblinet.com/nomi/ ??).
thanks for your support

Many thanks for all the help we received by Posters in this forum.
There are a few locations left, which cannot be identified without further information we are still lacking.
If somebody is interested in italian immigrants to the Ruhr-Area in the years 1827 to 1920, please don't hesitate to contact me. Most of this italian people went back to Italy, some of them emigrated later to 'America', a few settled down in Bottrop.
For your convenience we installed a new e-mail address (please delete the spaces and underscores):
