Libretti Family - Sassano, Italy

Post by freebird723 »

Hello,

I am trying to find some info on my Great Grandparents from Sassano, Italy. I'm trying to obtain their parent's info (name, birth date, etc.) if possible or how I could obtain birth records of my Great Grandparents which might list their parent's names.

The info I have is:

Great Grandfather:
Pasquale Libretti
Birth: 8/19/1833 in Sassano, Italy
Immigrated to NY in approx 1901 and died in 1907.

Great Grandmother:

Marianna Femminelli
Birth: 12/19/1842 in Sassano, Italy
Immigrated to NY in approx 1901 and died in 1927

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

Great Grandfather:
Pasquale Libretti
Birth: 8/19/1833 in Sassano, Italy
Immigrated to NY in approx 1901 and died in 1907
Pasquale immigrated sure before 1901 because there is a 1901 arrival manifest form him stating he was an U.S.Citizen (same for his wife Marianna):

http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0020

there is a note on their lines "20 October 1891" perhaps it was the Naturalization date?

on the free site:

http://www.italiangen.org/vitalreclist.stm

I found this record:

Surname Libretti
Given Name Pasquale
Age 76 y
Month June
Day 30
Year 1909
Certificate Number 12259
County Kings

Are you sure 1907 was his death year? Maybe asking for this 1909 death certificate could be helpful (it's possible on the death certificate you'll find parent's names)

Laura,

Thank you for the information that you shared. I didn't even see that they were listed as U.S. Citizens on the manifest. I thought that was when they immigrated but you're right, they must have become citizens far earlier than I realized.

Thanks for passing along the link as well....very helpful!

Do you have any idea how I could obtain birth records from Sassano, Italy?

Thanks,
Kathy

Freebird,
I am reasearching my GGF Domenico Feminella. Nobody in our family knows anything about his origins. I see that most Feminella's came from Sassano, so I am looking there. His name could have evolved over the years. According to the census he came to the US in 1882 or 1883 when he was 15 or 16. His mother Maria followed three years later. The census indicates that she was 50, a widow and had only one child (my GGF).

Does any of this information sound familiar? If so, please let me know.

Thanks,
Jim2814

To obtain records from Sassano, you must write to the comune in Italian to make your request. Use this link. It will tell you about writing to Italy for records, and it will provide you with form letters in Italian if you do not know how to write in the language.

Hi Jim,

Sorry for the delayed response, but I've been offline for a bit. Unfortunately the name Domenico Feminella has not come up in my search yet. I will definitely reach out to you if I come across anything.

Good Luck!

Kathy,

I don't have the subscription to Footnote.com but I know some members here do have....
I believe I found the index to the Naturalization Index for Pasquale Libretti...
http://www.footnote.com/search.php?quer ... id=3866979

It's under Libretto Pascuale - Naturalization Index NYC Courts -
from the quick look I read:

Naturalization Year: 1891 (Full date: October 20, 1891)
Immigrant Surname: LIBRETTO
Immigrant Given Name: PASQUALE
Address: 145 Baxter street
Court: COMMON PLEAS COURT, NEW YORK COUNTY.
Birth Year: 1865
Age: [Birth Year]
Nationality: ITALIAN
Arrival Year: 1881
Witness 1 Full Name: ANGELO PIZZARELLI

I know year of birth is off, but maybe it worth a look....

I was wondering if you could help me....on the Ellis Island manifest that my GGF appears on he is with a person with the last name of Femminella, Anna. They were all from Sassano and headed to Chicago. It was in 1901 that they immigrated. My family name is Petrizzo. Would love to know if there is a connection. Thanks!

Hi Capeto2,

Sorry, but as far as we know, my GGF Domenico Feminella came to the US alone and he was an only child. He spelled his last name with only one "m" which could have been lost at some time. We have no known relatives in Chicagoland, although there is probably some distant relationship. Nobody in our family knows which town he came from, but based upon my research it appears that almost every Feminella, and Femminella, came from Sassano. He also sometimes went by Tommaso or Thomas, so who knows what his birth name was. When he got married in NYC in 1890, he used Domenico Feminella, from Italy, no town specified.

Good luck in your search!

The civil records of Sassano Italy are available from the Latter Day Saints. You can find information about the tape numbers and a "family history center" near you on their website

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

You need to order the tapes through the Family History Center ($5) and view them on their reading machines. They will be in Italian.

I have been through most of the tapes and was very successful at finding records of my family, Barbella. They are in Italian

There were tapes which covered births, deaths, and marriages for the period from mid 1800s to 1900s.

Good luck,
Peter Barbella
