Church Records from San Michele, near Cassino!

Post by jamiecapaldi »

Can someone please let me know which of the following 3, should i write to on obtaining a record of Marriage or Birth:

Ufficio Anagrafe
Ufficio di Stato Civile
Parish Priest

The marriage took place in 1894, so the LDS is not available on Microfilm as records were destroyed after (1864) being held at the Abbey of Monte Cassino. I am also aware i can write a letter to get a record?

Please let me know what to do?

Ufficio di Stato Civile is the official keeper of such records for each comune.

Oh -wait a minute - are we talking about Cassino? My understanding is that no records of any kind, church or civil, survived the bombings of WWII. The only records which exist from that period are those which were re-created with the help of residents after the war ended.

See the first paragraph on this page: http://books.google.com/books?id=i_qgMM ... &q&f=false

How do i stand, if the Church they were married in was in San Michele (just a little north of Cassino, where they lived)??

My suspicion is that you are not going to find any records, however best to wait for one of our Italian researchers to jump in.

You might catch their attention with a new thread, subject "Church records from San Michele, Cassino" or something of that sort.

I heard that some records survived the bombing of Montecassino but they are Stato delle Anime fore the 1700's.
Jamie, I know you are frustrated but there are no records for Italians who left Cassino and te surrounding area before WW2. not civil or parish.
I have done lots of research in the area.
