Nicastro: Caruso or Montisanti Family

Post by RichardFJCaruso »

My grandfather, Joseph Caruso, born 08 Dec 1891. He came to the United States when he was around 8 years old. He said he lived in Nicastro. We were told his real last name was something like Montesanti and that his father had a castle with alot of land, mostly olives and grape vineyards. My grandfather took the names of the people that cared for him, there were 18 children in all, and all went to different families after my great-grandfather lost his land. The children were separated. He came here to the United States with his caretakers and took their last name, CARUSO. Looking for any information anyone may have on my grandfathers parents and family. Please E-Mail me at dvldoc78@hotmail.com. Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the Forum!
Which US records do you have for your grandfather?
Do any of them list his surname as something other than Caruso?
Do you have his ship manifest?
Thank you!

If the 1973 SSDI belongs to your grandfather, you may want to order his SS Application for $27
He will have listed his parents' names and place of birth

Social Security Application SS-5

His SS# is available here if you don’t already have it:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... _form=true

About the SS Application:
http://genealogy.about.com/od/online_re ... equest.htm
The SS-5, or Application for Social Security Number is a great resource for learning more about individuals who died after about 1960, and generally includes the following:
- Full name
- Full name at birth, including maiden name
- Present mailing address
- Age at last birthday
- Date of birth
- Place of birth
- Father's full name
- Mother's full name, including maiden name
- Sex
- Race as indicated by the applicant
- Whether the applicant ever applied for Social Security or Railroad Retirement before
- Current employer's name and address
- Date signed
- Applicant's signature
Order form SSA-711 (can be done online):
