Curatola - Marcellino Family
Curatola - Marcellino Family
Hey guys, I could use some help in finding some info on my relatives:
Michele "Mike" Curatola was born February 1 1907 in Calabria Italy.
He died in Brooklyn, NY on Sept. 23 1995.
He was married to Giovanna "Jennie" Marcellino.
She was born around October 1904 in Calabria and also died in Brooklyn, NY (most likely in the 1980s).
The couple had at least 9 children:
Jimmy, Rosie, Dominick, Sammy, Carol, Fannie, Jeannie, Joseph, & Frankie.
Jimmy & Rosie were born in Italy, while the rest were born in New York.
I'd love any info that anyone can find about Michele & Jennie - I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks so much!,
Nick

Re: Curatola - Marcellino Family
Hi
Is this your Michele Curatola?
Social Security Death Index
about Michele Curatola
Name: Michele Curatola
SSN: xxx-xx-7011
Last Residence: 11229 Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States of America
Born: 1 Feb 1907
Died: 23 Sep 1995
State (Year) SSN issued: New York (Before 1951)
If yes, then you can send for his SS-5 Social Security Application, for a fee, which will include the names of his parents and his place of birth...
At this site.
http://genealogy.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi= ... t/main.jsp
HOWEVER, For the above person... I have also found a US Passport application (same date of birth - Feb 1, 1907) for Michele Curatola/Carratola who was born in New York, to father Vincenzo Curatola who was born in Italy. The name "Vincenzo" was often Americanized to "James" - Vincenzo immigrated to US in 1893, lived in US for 27 years, and then returned to Italy in 1920 - maybe for a visit? Or did Michele/Michael get married in Italy? (birthplace for Vincenzo is listed as Fiumefreddo Bruzio, Cosenza, Italy) This is in the Calabria Region.
Does any of this sound familiar? I will post the passport application if you want me to.
Also found a James Curatola, 65, and son Michele/Michael Curatola, 21, in the 1930 Census living on Flushing Avenue in Brooklyn...

Re: Curatola - Marcellino Family
Also in the NYC Vital Records index ( at free site www.italiangen.org) ) is listed a death record for a Vincenzo Curatola, age 77, in 1943 in Brooklyn/Kings cty. That would put his birth date at about 1866.
Curatola Vincenzo 77 y Mar 20 1943 6727 Kings
The census age for James Curatola in Brooklyn, in 1930, was 65. Also putting his date of birth at about 1865/66...
Food for thought?

Tessa. Wow! I would love if you could post that passport application. It definitely sounds like its them. Michele's first son was known as James, but was really Vincenzo, so it would make sense that his father was Vincenzo also.
If you could post that census too, that would be great - it sounds correct - Im pretty sure Michele got married in Italy. The social security thing is definitely him - Im going to order it! and now that you gave me his death info, maybe I can order his death certificate!
Thanks so much, this is wonderful!

Re: Curatola - Marcellino Family
Here is a 1932 ship manifest for Giovanna Marcellino and her daughter Rosina Curatola (age 7)
Rosina is listed as a US Citizen and has a US passport.
Giovanna lists her place of birth as Fiumefreddo, and her last Permanent Residence as Fiumefreddo.
The same was listed across the line for Rosina, but then crossed out and "US Cit" written above it...

Re: Curatola - Marcellino Family
A VERY LUCKY find!!!!
Here is the next page of the Passport document...
LOTS of great information AND a photo of Michele at age 17-1/2 years!
There is also a physical description, AND a list of 3 brothers
Also noted is that his father's address at the time of the passport application (1925) was Hester St., New York, NY
On the right is a letter from the Department of State verifying his birth in NYC...
Click once to enlarge, and again to magnify...
NOTE: The "Oath of Allegiance" at the bottom right of the image is actually from the next document in the folder - it does not belong to Michele's record...

The photo is not something we find often...so that is a real bonus!
Mother's name should be on the birth record and the Social Security application.

Re: Curatola - Marcellino Family
Hey, I spoke to one of my cousins, they gave me some amazing info:
Vincenzo's wife was Philomena Caputo. They had at least 8 kids:
Michele, Antonio, Giuseppe, Rosina, Frances, Carolina, Domenick, & Frank. Can you maybe find anything else out about the mother or any of the other kids? Thanks so much.

Re: Curatola - Marcellino Family
I believe Michele's brother Antonio was born in 1897 in Calabria, if that helps.
Re: Curatola - Marcellino Family
I just found some info about Giovanna Marcellino. Her parents were Giuseppe Marcellino & Angelina Pagnotta. They were both from Calabria as well. Maybe someone can help with some info on them? Although, Im not sure if they ever came to America.
Thanks, Nick
Thanks, Nick
Re: Curatola - Marcellino Family
I just found out that Giovanna had several brothers and sisters: Francesco, Carmine, Domenick, Rosina, Alfonso, & Luigi; if that can help at all.
Thanks again,
Nick
