Joseph Galletta

Post by ngall15 »

I am trying to find out some information about my grandfather, Joseph Galletta. He was born in Italy, but I don't know which city. I cannot remember the exact date of his birth. It was somewhere around March 29, 1925. I am not exactly sure about the day or year. His father was named Natale Galletta. His mother was Marina and her maiden name was Scandora or Scandura (we are not sure of the spelling).

I would like to know where he was born and when he arrived in America.

Now, there is some confusion about his naturalization, and no member of my family is sure what exactly happened. Joseph Galletta was born in Italy and came to America when he was very young, perhaps six months old. He served in the US army during WWII, but he had trouble getting a passport or an Italian visa, (no one is exactly sure which), in the 1970s when he traveled to visit his Italian relatives in Sicily. It seems that when he arrived in America he was listed under his mother's maiden name as Joseph Scandora/Scandura. That is how his name was recorded at Ellis Island, I am told.

I would like to know when he was naturalized and if his name was officially Joseph Galletta or Joseph Scandora/Scandura.

Thank you!
