Post by dmchugh »

Looking for any information on Vincent Rossi, born around 1833 in Italy, married in Edinburgh in September 1863. Especially interested in his birth place.

I've searched on Scotland's people website but no record of a marriage for him. What was the wife's name please?

I have found the record - it was under Rosse marrying Catharine McKnight. I attach a copy. Doesn't say where he was born unfortunately. I's the first on the list - the handwriting is appalling!

In the record...
Vincent Rosse, age 30, Shop Porter, Bachelor residing at Paisley Close, High Street, Edinburgh. Father is Domenico Rosse, laborer; Mother is Catherine Rosse (maiden name looks like Devoto) The surname Devoto is concentrated mostly in the Region of Liguria, with higher numbers found in Provinces of Genoa and La Spezia.

Happy to help! :-)
The handwriting itself was not too bad, but the faded out sections make it very difficult to read.

Most of the Italians that went to Scotland were from the Province of Frosinone. The surnames Rossi and Di Vito can both be found in Picinisco, Villa Latina, area. Contact Stuart Capaldi, he has a lot of information on Italians in Scotland.
