Ideas about FLORIO's

Post by stfrancis »

Im looking for a method to find where my GGrandfather and his wife came from in Italy (Commune). Unfortunately no success with info from relatives who are living in NY.

He is Michele Florio (various spellings of course), born circa 1840's, prob married in Italy to Catherina Urga (Urgo,Urcca,Gorga)....circa 1860's. I have traced him somewhat in Manhattan. Death certificate says he arrived circa 1872. He died in 1880, on Mott st.

It looks like they had children, Michele, Alfredo, Lilly, (Giovanni, died at birth) in Manhattan. I have quite a bit of their info after he died.

Catherina died in 1889 in Manhattan. She arrived circa 1875.After her first husband died, she married again to Giov Focarile.

I checked the Italian Names Distribution, and it seems like the name is mostly in Campania or Puglia...Urga (if spelled correct) is a rare name it seems.

The ship lists dont tell me much. I also looked in Ancestry and Family Search but they dont seem to be indexed yet.

Thank you. Very Interesting work. I think I did much of what you mentioned already, but not much result yet.

I forgot to mention Caterina Urga's parents as listed on her 2nd marriage are Vincenzo Gorga and Teresa Madero.

Most likely the Florio's , Urga (Gorga), and Madero (or Madera) are from the south or central areas.

I also verified the Antenati site.

thank you Suanj
These are the NY records I have found, among several others. So I have a lot of names and dates, but none of the records indicate where they originated from in Italy, cause its too early. Likewise I found a naturalization for Michele, possibly him, but only includes an additional name and address (Puccini, Crosby Street). Likewise with the 1880 Census, he is named Mike Froll.

His wifes name on the Census is listed as "Agnes", but his Mott street address matches that on his death certificate.

that ship list would suggest they married after their arrival, which I doubt since there is no marriage, or evidence, I have found in NY and the first born son, also Michele, was born circa 1876.

I also learned one son, named Alfredo, born 1880, has the additional name Alfredo SERENO Florio on his baptism.
thank you

Ok,
I posted the records, because so we can read here and to think abt the possible birthplaces... without to search evertime,so to remember...
I agree that no marriage record in New York, almost by a brief search.... but it is no sure...
abt the arrivals I am positive, abt the Caterina mother maiden name maybe right MATTERA, abt the possible birth region I am positive abt Campania (Salerno or Naples province) and at least also a area of Potenza province in Basilicata region near Salerno province.. these are the most probable provinces: Salerno, Napoli, Potenza...
just my opinion...
best regards,
suanj

Thank you Adelfio, good of you to do those searches for me. Its a starting point hopefully.

I used the Antenati site to look for any marriage Michele Florio -Gorga, but no luck. I guess many records are not there yet depending on the region.

Family search also has images for Potenza communes...

thank you , I know its difficult to figure.

Here is ALfred Florio marriage for everyone:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... print=true

For what its worth I QUICKLY went thru Indici Matrimoni for Vaglia Basilicata, up to 1878, and I dont think I saw any Florio named. The images are on FS.

Since the first son, Michele JR is born circa 1876, marriage should be right before...maybe. Another sibling, Lilly Florio, (sister of Michele Jr, and Alfredo, Giovanni) is my Grandmother, moved to Montreal in 1909.
