Couca??
My paternal grandmother's family is from Caserta. However, on ship manifests, it lists the town/city as Couca and the country as Caserta. Is anyone familiar with Couca. Also, the date of the manifest was 1850. Was Caserta a country unto itself back then???

Just a guess but Couca could be Conca della Campania in Caserta. I've seen the handwritten lower case letter "n" misinterpreted as a "u" and vice versa.

On other manifests, it lists that he came from Couca Campania. So perhaps that makes some sense.
