You two are very clearly much more versed in looking for these records than I am, and I'm in your debt for the help. I'll look through some more indices and see if I can find even more info.
Next step for me is to write to some churches around Catona and see if someone can find a baptismal record ...

This may help to clear up the mystery of who "Francesco Nunzio" is. :D

Re: Need help with the mystery of my GGF's birth commune
Try to find baptism and confirmation records. A middle name may have been included on the baptism records, and he may have begun using that name.
Generally, children chose a confirmation name, which would also be indicated on church records. That may also be where you find "Domenic."
Either ...

Totally unrelated to your search, but thought I would pass it along.

Need help with the mystery of my GGF's birth commune
I haven't done this research in a while, I'm getting back in, and I have a problem.
On more than 1 record, my GGF ( Dominic Barber/Barberi ) mentioned "Catona" as his birth place. Other records simply list "Italy". Catona was a commune of Reggio Calabria (RC) and was absorbed by the city of Reggio ...

Re: Well, I'm lost & confused
Well I haven't looked at this thread in ages. I didn't even know about Castle Garden. Good find there. You might be onto something. I'll have to spend some time to do more research. I haven't been able to devote much time to this project in a while, but I want to ramp up again. This will hopefully ...

Re: Well, I'm lost & confused
I think I'm going to try and get his death cert before continuing with his birth certificate. His death cert may have some information that I haven't seen yet. Now I have to battle with New York State to get a few various documents. They're the worst to deal with.

Re: Well, I'm lost & confused
Interesting. I've never looked in Canadian immigration records. His Declaration of Intent says he arrived in NYC in 1900, so I wouldn't think that the Canadian record is his. I will have to entertain 2 possibilities:
1) He was born Francesco Nunziato and changed his name to Dominic
2) He had a twin ...

Re: Well, I'm lost & confused
I did check the films once, but it was before I really knew what to look for. I couldn't figure out how they were organized or anything. I have a friend who is heading to SLC sometime soon, so I will be giving him some info to check if he gets the chance.

Re: Well, I'm lost & confused
There are 2 documents I received. The 1st is a letter with the following text:
In riferimento alla Sua richiesta relativa all'estratto dell'atto di nascita del sig. Dominico Barber, si comunica che, in sequito alle ricerche effettuate risulta che alla data del 28.19.1886 a Catona e nato il sig ...

Re: Well, I'm lost & confused
Did Nunzio have a sister called Domenica, and did your Great Grandfather Domenico travel to Toronto in 1913 with Cousins?
I have never known of any siblings. It's definitely possible he had some though.
What was Domenico's Wife Called?
Marietta Labella (surname spelling?)
Teresa Martia ...

Well, I'm lost & confused
A few months ago, I wrote a letter to the comune of Reggio Calabria requesting my great grandfather's birth certificate. I received a response today, with a birth certificate extract attached.

Re: WHY SOME ITALIANS HAVE AGE DISCREPANCY!
I've heard from a few people that Italian birthdays were often based on date of conception (if known) rather than the date they were actually born. This may have come from a wicked long game of telephone, so I have no idea how accurate my info is.
