Looking for alternate sources, Bottini

Post by meticulousmobile »

I still haven't been able to find a birth location for Francesco Bottini, my mystery 2xGGrandfather, or any new info. He showed up in the 1900, 1910, and 1920 censuses, and passed away in 1922. He was born in 1843, and probably immigrated between 1875 and 1885, although I can't find that record either to be sure. I know he was married in Boston in 1885 though. Was there an 1890 census? Is it reviewable? What about state censuses? Weren't they 1905, 1915, etc? Can I search or order film for MA census? Does anyone have relatives from Lonate Pozzolo, or knowledge of the town, or know where to write to inquire about if they have his birth record? It's just my guess for a location, but the FHL doesn't have anything for that town. Sorry to ramble, it's my grandmothers' grandfather, and we just had her 90th birthday, and I really want to make some progress on her side of the family soon, thank you all, grazie mille!

Have you checked the church records for the 1885 marriage?
According to the marriage index on NEHGS the priest was
Boniface Bragantini of Boston (indicated by ditto marks from
the marriage on the line above
)

The church may have been St Leonards:
1873: Saint Leonard's is built becoming the second oldest Italian church in America and oldest in Boston. At the same time, the Italian-Portuguese Catholic Church St. John the Baptist is dedicated on North Bennett Street. Bishop John Williams pays $28,000 for the former Free Will Baptist Meeting House. Father Angelo Conterno is appointed to serve as the Italian priest and Father John Ignazio Azevedo as the Portuguese priest. A two year fundraising contest is held to determine which ethnic group will get official ownership of the building. The Portuguese win by out-fundraising the Italians $12,000 to $10,000.

1876: Father Joachim Guerrini raises money to purchase the Hooten Estate at the corner of Prince and Hanover Streets which becomes Saint Leonard of Port Maurice, the first official church of all Italians -- especially the Genoese and Neopolitans. The congregation contains nearly 1,500 Genoese in Boston proper, North End Italians from Genoa, Naples, Parma, Piacenza, etc. and 2,000 Merrimack Valley and South Shore Italians covering an area of over 1,000 square miles.

1877: Saint Mary's of the Sacred Heart Church is rebuilt following a design of Patrick Keeley.

1878: After a falling into debt, Father Guerrini moves to New York to escape his creditors. He is replaced by Father Boniface Bragantini who presides from 1878 to 1887 over a mostly Genoese parish suddenly besieged by increasing numbers of Irish parishioners and Southern Italians who cause the Northern Italians to withdraw to other parts of the city.

I came across francisco (francesco) Bottini in the 1895 ARGENTINA census. He was 52 and his birthyear is 1843. I made a copy of the census report so if you send me your address by private mail I can mail it to you...for all its worth since it could be a coincidence but interesting since in that period many northern Italians immigrated to Argentina and uruguay in the early 1800's.

This would mean he may have.if it were him, subsequently immigrated to the USA. It is at best a lead. =Peter=

Not sure what church it was, I have the date and text from your previous post, VJ, but haven't been into Boston to see the actual record. I guess I could order film for that. I know his son, John Angelo, was married at Sacred Heart in 1911, but have been told that St Leonards holds all the records from Sacred heart and St Stephens. Francesco was buried in St Michaels cemetery in Roslindale, they had the actual birthdate for him. Probably not the same Francesco Bottini in Argentina, as he was already in Boston by 1885, but possibly a relative!

Lonate Pozzolo has no civil records available but there are duplicates in the provincial capital of Varese at Archivio di Stato di varese, Via Coli di Lana 5, 21100, Varese, Lombardia Italy. The e-mail address is AS-VA Beniculturali.it

Further you may wish to if there is a military record for him since he may have served in the military. You can write a letter (www.mangeruca.com for form letter in Italian for military records and send to Il Comando, I Centri Documentali, Via Mascheroni 26, 20145, Milano, Lombardia which has jurisdic tion for Varese among others. =Peter=

Excellent, thanks Peter, so if I send an inquiry letter to the Archives with name, dob, parents names, they will check the records and see if his birth record is there? Sorry, I haven't had to write to Italy yet in my other research. I didn't see anything other than a map listed on FHL search for census in Boston, maybe I messed up, I'll check again. Anyone ever have luck with a state census, or are they not very informative?
