Thanks for all your advice. I had a friend help me with the letter. I thanked the Sindaco profusely (in Italian), and asked that he send my GF's birth certificate. Apparently, they DID send my GM's birth certificate, along with my GF's and GM's marriage certificate.
I didn't put any money in the envelope. Here's hoping.
I sent the first letter via normal airmail, registered. I got the registration delivery slip about 12-14 days later, and the certificate about 7-8 days after that.
If this fails, I have their phone number (it was in their return communication), and will ring them up, having a friend who is fluent in Italian ask foro the certificate.
