I am researching my grandfather Giovanni Niro of Casalvieri, Frosinone, Italy. I am new to the site and NEED HELP in how to proceed.

GIOVANNI NIRO was born Dec 20, 1896 in Casalvieri
Married to a Lavinia or Marsella ?
Died 26 March 1976 in Hawthorne, Los Angeles, California
I believe his father was a Nicolo

Ellis Island has his wife's residence listed as Vilcavi. Does anyone know where this is at on a map?


I want to find out if anyone has researched in the Casalvieri area or if the records are available on microfilm.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Sherrie,

I figured I would post some of my information, too... Anyone have any information on the following:

Giovanni "John" Niro had a sister named Violanda and a brother named Virginio. Violanda Married Celestino Benacquista (my great-grandparents). They immigrated to the US in 1928 and lived in Schenectady, NY. I have no information prior to their immigration, other than their parents names. Violanda's parents were Francesco and Agnese (Monaco) Niro; Celestino's parents were Angelo and Antonia Benacquista (Maiden name unknown). Any information will be most appreciated.

I took a quick look at Celestino Benacquista on ancestry.com and found that he first came to the USA in March 4, 1921 at the age of 18. He lists his mother as Antonia and that she was residing in (Fontechiari), Italy.

He returned to the USA a 2nd time in 1928.

I saw those records but was unsure if they were the same person. The 1928 trip matches his passport... I can't tell if the 1921 trip does or not. According to my grandmother, he came here to find a place to live, then went back to Italy to marry Violanda and bring her to the States.

Ok... So lets say that Celestino came to the US first in 1921, then went back to Italy to marry Violanda, then came back to the states again with Violanda to live. Where would I find the manifest that shows him leaving the US to go to Italy? The only manifests I can find are the ones coming into the US... what about departing from the US and arriving in Italy???
