Hi, I currently live in Sydney, Australia and I am interested in obtaining Italian citizenship. My father was born in Italy, as were both of my grandparents. However my father became an Australian citizen when he was a minor, thus before my birth.
I understnd that citizenship is only eligible for those who's parents are Italian citizens at the time of their birth, I however I am desperate to find a loophole in this. Does anyone know if there is a petition or forms you can fill in to ask for leniency or for the Italian Immigration department to make exceptions in the rule? Any help or guidence with this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Sarah
There's no leniency - it's hard enough for qualified citizens to get approved.
When you say that your father naturalized as a minor, did he do it independently or with his parents? I've seen a few cases where a person in Australia naturalized independently as a minor (Age 17), but the Italian government did not recognize the naturalization. If he naturalized with his parents, then you're out of luck on that one.
Regardless, you can still obtain citizenship by residing in Italy for 3 years.
I was lucky - not only are both my parents Italian, I was registered BOTH in Scotland AND Italy. Eventually I ended up with a UK passport but a few years ago I applied and received an Italian one too.
I am now officially both Scottish (British is insulting to me, no offence to anyone proud to be so) as well as Italian.
My UK passport comes in handy for travelling to the States as I dont need to go through the long process of visa application. I only need fill a in a visa waiver online.
Is it possible to gain Italian citizenship through having your residing address in Italy????
Dear Sarah did it ever occur toyou to ask the Italian consulate nearest your home or the embassy in OZ as to whether you can obtain your italian citizenship based upon your current status?
